Before spending money on glass, consider macro extension tubes. They are inexpensive and you can use your current lenses. I have just begun exploring the "macro" world. Attached is a photo using my Canon 80D w/ a 13mm macro extension tube/EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM
Thanks for the free Sunday Challenge!
Some garden fauna photos
A knowledgeable positive group of people!
Texas is wonderful for the wildflowers.
If newbies prefer to have conversation regarding previously discussed subjects, how is that accomplished by searches? All too often old hats berate us newbies for rehashing old subjects. I consider that very unfair and sours newbies on participation. Maybe the old hats can choose not to participate rather than criticize newbies for not attempting to search through old posts.
Mac Book Pros are excellent for you needs but consider these negatives.
1. Apple only supports computers for five years. I have two 17" Mac Book Pros in the closet with defective video cards and cannot be repaired by Apple or authorized repair shops.
2. When traveling, it is bad enough worrying about your camera and glass. A high end Mac Book is another few thousand to worry about.
Keep a Mac Desktop at home, if you really want the apple product.
Consider a decent windows laptop for travel, invest in some high end SD cards for storage.
I have a HP Spectre 360 "laptop/tablet" which is adequate. SD card port is a plus for your 80D.
Nice! One of my favorite birds. I caught this one ground pecking? Most of the pics were blurred as he was pecking seriously fast. When I went closer I disturbed it so this was my clearest shot.

If your son buys the camera, I recommend that he practices focusing on the subjects at the higher zooms, AF and MF before hitting the streets. Although not necessarily pro quality photos, it beats carrying a back pack full of glass when traveling. It is nice for street shots from a distance.
I love the barred owl photos. Birds are one of my favorite photo subjects. I was recently at the back side of my property and a barred owl was in an old tree staring at me. All I had was my phone so I was able to catch a pic.
