You made some great points, but there is a group of photographers who gets a kick out of having the latest greatest camera. Yet, they seldom use the wonderful features of these cameras.

I would not mind larger resolutions for the times I need to perform a massive crop, see the example of a massive crop failure. I used a 7D Mark II, I wish I could have used one of my pro bodies, the crop would have turned out a little better. I also included an image that I crop using pro body.

I agree , a 100MP is a bit much, I stated earlier that years ago I had 16x20 and 24x36 prints made from 8MP and a 10 MP camera. The prints were amazing! I would not want a 100 MP camera, can you imagine the computer processing power needed to process such ling files!

As a guy who has been a photographer for many years, I believe a 100 megapixels are overkill. I have made immaculate large prints i.e. 16x20 & 24x36 from an 8 and 10 megapixel cameras. 18 to 20 Megapixels is more than enough megapixels for my photography style. We must also remember that most photographers are using the images for the internet, a forum that only use a minimum of megapixels.

What’s your opinion? Is there money to be made in this? Or are people throwing cameras away and getting new ones when they malfunction?

I think I would enjoy repairing cameras and learning exactly how they work and everything about them. But I don’t wanna waste my money on a course only to find out no one pays to have cameras repaired.

Do most professional photographers replace their shutters? Or do they just buy another camera?

I have been shooting for 25 years, for the majority of that time I was a sports photographer as well as general photog. Most of my friends including myself sent our cameras out to be repaired. Most of us , invested several thousand bucks in a body. We did not look at our bodies as throwaways. There are basically two camps when it come to the pros. The guys who were portrait and general photographers usually kept the cameras for a long time. But a few of the sports guys did sell their expensive bodies whenever a better model came out, they felt like they needed every advantage possible to stay competitive in the competitive world of sports. But, many pros who made all of their income from photography and were counting pennies kept the same old bodies for years. Until they needed to upgrade not out of want but necessity! I am now in that camp, I have two pro bodies that are 14 years old. I need the upgrade for better ISO performance, because I am now shooting in a very dim environment where using a flash would be a distraction. My opinion is this if you are in the right market with a good business plan, you can be in a win win situation. In the last two years I have had two pro lenses repaired for a great price by a mom and pop camera repair shop. If you are familiar with business practices do a SWOT analysis from there make a decision to determine if such a business would work in your area.

[quote=drklrd]Thank you for the comment sir. I hope the OP understands the points we have made. I cut my teeth on sorts and events doing what I do now as a retired photographer. As they say Social Security is not enough to live on much less have a hobby in photography to support so I went back to work part time doing what I know best. They say when you are a good to above average photographer you can always find some work. All I did was call a studio once I had digital even if there was a five or six year break from photography I was back to work in 3 or 4 weeks as a freelance. Have a great day.

You are welcome, enjoy retirement, like you I have had multiple disciplines that I worked during my career. Law enforcement, but photography has a place of its own. I once had the pleasure of photographing Nadia Comaneci, I would never have thought in a million years while watching the Olympics in 1976 that I would one day meet her, but not only meet her but photograph her. Doors that only photography can open! I admire you for being a wedding photographer. I don't know how you guys do it, Lol!

Good point drklrd! The reason I did not volunteer to shoot my sister's wedding was because I was a photojournalist and sports shooter. Plus, I had a policy that one should never do business with family. But the main reason was this, I am not a wedding photographer! I have had many images published in newspapers and magazines as well as images used for television programs. Can I shoot a wedding yes, but would I? No! Because I realized that I did not have the temperament for what take place during weddings, thus I never became a wedding photographer, with the exception of two times. Due to the families whom I knew pleading with me that they could not afford a wedding photographer. Yes, I felt sorry for them, this was well over 20 years ago, I shot the weddings as gifts only charging them for the cost of film and processing. I agree, let the pro wedding photographers take care of the weddings! Sadly because of health, I am unable to do much of any photography these days.

That is the key, doing a little homework and be willing to pay for a true professional wedding photographer.

The last wedding I attended was my sister wedding 10 years ago. I never offer my services as a photographer, but I did offer her the advice to not skimp on the wedding photographer. The photographer charged her well over a $1,000 US. I took my camera and discreetly made images from my sitting position.. I am glad I did this the photographer was horrible. Ten yeas later my photos are on her wall, the hire photographer images are no where to be seen.
