i ordered mine yesterday. My advice is to check it out thoroughly. The 50-250 lens i bought with the refurb z50 kit was bad. I thought i was just having problems setting the camera up for back button focus.

do you use in camera diffraction compensation and distortion control or do it in post, and why?

I shoot with the Z50, have been for several, months. I had it set to back button focus. IO was watching a video by Ken Rockwell and the settings he uses and made a few changes. Now I cannot set up back button focus. I deactivated the shutter button focus, went into the shooting menu and enabled the AEL-AFL button to AF ON, but it will not focus. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

After much digging online, it seems that the Z50 will only back button focus in AF-S. Follow the suggestions of other posters and use AF-S. If you get the green square, auto focus worked. Then change to AF-C and see that the square won't turn green. What a great gift from Nikon!

I’ve been receiving trip offerings from them for while but hadn’t known anyone who had ever gone on one of their trips. What you describe sounds interesting. My main concern with them is how much you have to rough it in the sleeping/room arrangements. I have a questionable back so camping is out for me and another senior. But a regular, non camp cabin, bed would be ok. I’ll look into it. Thx for the idea.

Cabins, no tents, in the park, no lines to get in and most meals provided!

not to pump up this company, but i took a tour with Road Scholar a few years ago. Itinerary was Las Vegas to Zion. Half a day there and the whole next day. Left for Bryce and again, half a day there and the whole next day. Left for the north rim of the Grand Canyon and again half a day there and the whole next day. Inside the park sleeping arrangements which means NO waiting. Most meals included. A pro photographer was one of our guides and was very helpful. I will use them again.

Trying to make up my mind between a Olympus om-d e-m10 w/2 kit lenses & the Nikon z50 w/2 kit lenses. If it matters, my current cameras are Nikons. Just looking for something smaller & lighter to carry sometimes. Thoughts, please.

Just bought a nikon refurbed z50, 2 lens kit, and adapter. I sold some older stuff and lenses that i didn't use anymore to MPB. Will post on how that transaction went maybe later. Haven't tried the adapter yet and my wife likes the size.

This is just my humble opinion. I use focal as a helper for my non-professional skills. It lets me know what the best focus adjustment is for each camera and lens. The same lens on a different camera will need a separate offset and i'm glad the camera keeps track of this. The use of good filters is a must if you use them. I had a cheap filter that made one lens that i have unable to use the program. The offset it calculated was outside of the camera's adjustable range. A good filter fixed that issue. Focal lets you know what the sharpest aperture is for a camera/lens combo. For zooms i run a wide test and a long test. I set the offset close to the long end between the 2 values. I have labels on my hoods to tell me what the best and next best apertures would be for each camera. The reports it generates include diffraction limits. I shoot in manual with the aperture set to the optimum, an appropriate shutter speed for focal length, and sometimes auto iso. Adjustments can easily be made for correct exposure. I hope this helps.

If you take a small boat cruise in Alaska, I guarantee you will not be bored. Something like one of these:

My wife and I were on one about 7 years ago. One passenger never came in for meals. He stayed out taking pictures all the time.

We both want to do it again.

If you want something more relaxed but not boring, check out river cruises in Europe. Just make sure the boat is not too big.

second a vote for uncruise, many photo opportunities

We are thinking about spending a week in Alaska in early September, based in Anchorage.

Any tips as to must-see places and clothing to take will be appreciated.

Just got back from Alaska 10 days ago. One thing we did was take the train to Denali and the 92 mile bus ride. In total that would take 3 days, including the train back to anchorage.

Different size, as in the pixel resolution. The embedded JPEG to the RAW is a small-sized thumbnail view, not the full-sized JPEG from the camera along with the RAW. This preview JPEG is limited for the purpose of viewing, not processing / editing, printing, etc.

thank you. I was ultimately trying to figure out if shooting raw+jpeg was worth it looking at pictures on vacation, away from a computer. They do look different on my ipad. Raw pics seem duller.

meaning less compression? Which one is less compressed, the raw jpeg or the camera jpeg?
