We are thinking about spending a week in Alaska in early September, based in Anchorage.

Any tips as to must-see places and clothing to take will be appreciated.

Warm clothes and rain gear. We’ve been there in June, July and end of August early September. The first time there had to buy a really warm sweater.

It'll be cool and damp- with the smell of wet willows and decaying birch leaves- so, yeah, in the Anchorage area, be prepared for upper 30's - lower 40's with drizzle. "Must See" spots are very subjective... and some can't be appreciated until you've had the necessary experiences and trials... and vocabulary. Trouble is, a week goes by really, really fast and with hundreds of miles between points of interest... it'll seem like two hours at Disney World. After you're home and have chewed on the adventure, you'll realize how much you missed...

Just got back from Alaska 10 days ago. One thing we did was take the train to Denali and the 92 mile bus ride. In total that would take 3 days, including the train back to anchorage.

Drive the Denali Highway.

I agree with alandg46...drive the Denali Highway if it is not closed. If you have the time, and if it is not yet closed, take the big green bus tour through Denali National Park. If you have access to a vehicle, drive down to Seward, and tour their nature museum. There are a couple of glaciers you can stop at on that route. The board walk just south of Anchorage should be open.

Get this book "the Milepost" https://shop.themilepost.com/collections/front-page/products/the-milepost-2021. Spend at least two weeks. Plan your trip as if it was a Military Campaign!

Best check on the rental car situation. By September you should be okay but a lot of co-workers had friends/family have to cancel visits because rental cars where not available or prohibitory expensive.

Just got back from a small photo workshop run by Mark Edward Harris and Sandro Miller. Exceptional trip to a Anchorage and Barrow. If you are looking for someone to help you plan your journey, or plan your entire journey, I would contact Schawna Toma at Northern Compass. She is extremely well connected and got us into places that NO ONE has access to. She arranged all travel, accommodations and solved problems. She is also very pleasant to be around. Tell her I sent you and give her my best regards. schawnathoma@northerncompassgroup.com

Dress in layers. Helps as you are inside then out. Also a short 24-70mm lens and a 200-600mm lens. Need that for the whales and eagles! Have fun

If you get to go to any glaciers you will need more than a sweater, even in summer, it can be pretty cold. After all you may be in front of one big ice cube stretching back for miles, and in icy water if by any ship.

A small point but important. "Barrow" is not the name of this city anymore. In 2016 the name was changed to Utqiagvik. Once you learn how to pronounce it, it is sort of fun to say. It just sort of rolls off the tongue.
