I appreciate your comments. It was the first time I ever took photos of a dragonfly, and looking back at the pictures, you are correct. This guy or gal took me by surprise, so I was just happy to get the pictures I did. If I get a chance again, I will try auto focus, and compare the results.

I have finally shot something worthy to post here. This dragonfly was a very cooperative, and even flew away and came back for a second pose. These are straight out of the camera, nothing has been done to them. Nikon 3000 with Nikkor 55-200 mm lens zoomed all the way out to 200. Body was in auto mode with manual focus. I did not have time to play with settings, I was just glad he waited for me to get my camera from the house.

Venus and Jupiter will align again in May 2013, and hopefully we will all still be here.

The only thing I would add is that your "Friends Forever" shot suffers from a too-narrow depth of field. The front kid is perfectly in focus, the back one not. This comes from having a too-wide aperture. At f/1.8, you probably had only a couple of inches worth of focus-depth. The same shot taken at around f/8 or f/11 would probably have had both tykes in focus all the way.

If you haven't got the faintest idea what I'm talking about, read this:

Good point. I wanted to see if anyone else mentioned that before I chimed in. I find aperture adjustments to be very important. It's like another way of focusing.

Very nice, natural-looking photos.

I like the pictures and agree with the above comments. I have the same equipment as you, and it is always fun to learn new things with posting pictures. This is the most helpful and friendly site for this purpose.

Nice pictures of the nuthatch. Sometimes it's the little things that give the best reward.

I was poking around Saturday night when I saw this modern church. I think that I am getting the mechanics of my camera (Sony a580) down pretty good now. These were both shot in manual mode, hand held. All I did in photoshop was to straighten them a bit. That's all. I used a 55-200mm kit lens.

You should offer a print to the church as a motion of goodwill.......

Very nice, #2 is great!

Keep it up. thanks for sharing.

I agree, #2 is fantastic, you can almost see the old cars traveling across it. The only change I would try is to get lower, ( as stated before ) and perhaps get the top of the bridge ( as stated before ). I think being left of center helps with the perspective of the lamps going away. Living close to them is a bonus, because you can always go back and try again.

How do you respond when some one ask how they can take a better photo, and want to correct the problem they are having and when you start to explain how, they say I don't care about all the kind of stuff, I just want to take a pic with out changing my settings, they should make a camera that you can do that with, easy to use? I went to one camera club meeting that was being organized and that was what most of them were asking. Purpose defeated before starting.

"They do make camera's that are easy to use, they call them "point and shoot". I'll trade you my point and shoot for your bigger camera with all those crazy settings"

You can also hold down the Control key while scrolling with the mouse wheel to change the size of everything. Roll it toward you and everything gets smaller, roll it away from you and it all gets bigger. When you get through, but it back like it fits when you started.

Another cool tip, thanks for sharing

Admin usually does not like posts done all in caps.
Best strategy for old weak eyes besides glasses, I have learned is CONTROL PLUS. It makes everything big....when you have finished control minus will resize.
I use it the opposite way so I dont have to scroll to see a full verticle.
Good luck...kindess is a wonderful virtue at any age.

I have been using computers for 20 years, and I never heard that tip before, Control+/Control-, thanks for info.
