John Gerlach does not accept tips at his workshops. You can buy him a glass of wine at dinner if you so choose.

The inhumanity of wars...

During WWII, Jews in Budapest were brought to the edge of the Danube, ordered to remove their shoes, and shot, falling into the water below.

The '60 Pairs of Iron Shoes' now line the river's bank, a ghostly memorial to the victims.

Jews who were executed here by Hungarian Nazis, fascist Arrow Cross militiamen during WWII. Victims were ordered to take off their shoes (shoes were valuable, resold by militia), and were shot at edge of water so that their bodies fell into river and were carried away.

They tied 3 people together so that they only had to shoot the person in the middle, to save bullets.

Many Glacier Hotel is the top spot for the Eastern part of Glacier. For the West part either Apgar area or Lake McDonald Lodge. The drive time between the east part and the west part of the park is quite long. I have always stayed part of my visit on the east and part on the west.

We have been to Tanzania twice and have our third trip booked for 2023. We travel with OAT (Overseas Adventure Travel). They are a USA company out of Boston. The local Tanzanian company they use is Kibo Guides. I can recommend both of these companies.

I am also 77 years old. I have done Alaska twice, once a Holland America Cruise/Land Tour, and once on my own. I flew into Fairbanks, then drove to Denali. We spent 4 nights at North Face Lodge 78 miles into the park. For 3 days they took us on guided trips deep in the park, wildlife photography was great. Then drove to Seward with a overnight stop in Talkeetna. In Seward took an all day boat trip through Kenai Fjords National Park, amazing marine wildlife and tide water glacier photography. Then on way back to Anchorage stayed in Whittier and took an all day boat tour through Prince William Sound, again great marine wildlife, Bald Eagle, and tide water glacier photography. Then fly home from Anchorage. I found that for photography purposes my land trip with small boat tours for marine life was far superior to a large cruise ship tour.

The rest of the story is that the murderers were Hungarians not Germans. They tied two people together so that they only had to shoot one, thus saving a bullet. When the shooting victim fell into the Danube, they took their partner with them to drown.

When in Warsaw, visit the Museum of the History of the Jews in Poland. It is only a few years old and very interesting.

I plan on being in Zurich for a couple of days this summer. Does anyone have a suggestion regarding a Photo Tour? Thanks for any suggestions.

I am a first time visitor to UHH. I have been to Alaska on a 2 week cruise-land tour and also driving on my own for 2 weeks. First for the cruise tour the weather the last week in May and first week in June was much better than what I experienced in July. If photography is your main interest in Alaska, I prefer driving myself. I start in Fairbanks, then drive to Denali. If you really want to experience Denali, stay at North Face Lodge in the park at the end of the road. They offer a 3day, 4 day, or 7 day package. Everything is included meals, room, transportation, and all activities. I stayed on a 4 day package, each day they took us to a different area to photograph. We saw every animal you could imagine, even a wolf close enough to photograph. You are near Wonder Lake and should get a view of Denali. I then drive to Seward to visit Kenai Fjords National Park. You take an all day boat ride to see all the marine wildlife and the tide water glaciers. You can also take an easy hike to get very close to Exit Glacier. Drive to Whittier, the drive thru the one way tunnel is interesting. Take an all day boat ride to see Prince William Sound and its wildlife and glaciers. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center on the road between Anchorage and Seward is a must stop for photography. You will see all types of wildlife in natural settings for great photography. Bears, Moose and everything else you can wish for. I enjoyed my cruise, but had much better photography experiences when driving Alaska on my own. I am sure you will have a great trip to Alaska-it is impossible not to.
