If the OS was originally loaded by Lenovo and you have no disk, the OS probably had an OEM key which you can only get from Lenovo if you didn’t record it somewhere. Did you ever make a system recovery disk for Win 7? (I’ve been working on a computer this week with similar issues.)

Contact Lenovo and try to get them to send you your Win 7 key and also to send you a Win 7 recovery or installation disk. Since you do own a key, they should be willing to do this at minimal charge.

If no luck with Lenovo, go back to the computer shop and tell them to load Win 7 OR Win XP. Many folks still run Win XP because it is very stable, and if the printer ran on Win 7 it should also run on Win XP.

I don’t know about Lenovo, but the Dell web site now provides all the OS images a particular computer is eligible for. It saved my bacon this week.

Here's my daily routine:

At 0400, my desktop computer runs iDrive and incrementally backs up the hard drive to their cloud servers.

At 0500, my desktop runs a backup to an external 2TB Seagate hard drive.

At 0900, my desktop runs a backup to an external 1TB Seagate hard drive attached to my laptop via my internal network.

The laptop SSD is backed up to iDrive the instant the computer is turned on.

While the possibility exists, that a primary SSD may die unexpectedly, that's a risk I'm willing to assume.

I'm a former IT infrastructure manager, and risk analysis was part of my job. No operation is taken without risk. I've seen servers, PC's and laptops die on boot-up, and no amount of precaution can prevent that.

Dennis, what’s the drive you’re using for your internal network drive? I might want to do that too.

Thanks,

The second shot and "crunchy" fits perfectly.

I’m in Northern Virginia, and have noticed this week that the trees and bushes are already budding. Yikes! Gotta get those bushes pruned!

Snow last Saturday, then expecting 76 temp this week. Crazy. I bet the fruit growers are going to have a rough spring. Won’t be too many photo ops if so unless we’re out early.

Do you feel you have the skill set to remove the drive from the case, open your desktop, locate an unused SATA port and power connector (assuming they’re available) and connect it internally? (You will need a SATA Cable, an unused SATA port on the motherboard and an unused power connector that matches the drive). That would be my first step. If you don’t feel competent to do that, can you get some assistance?

Your second option(s) have some risk involved, but do occasionally start a stalled drive. I usually slap the drive on the flat surface with my open hand. It may start the drive, or it may not. There’s also a possibility it could damage the platter, but I haven’t found that to be an issue if the drive is not spinning, but no guarantees. It does often work however. If it does, immediately copy the data off the drive before it fails again.

Some people have had success with removing the drive, sealing it in a plastic bag and putting it in the freezer for awhile. You then take it out, let it warm to room temperature and try to start the drive. This has the risk of causing moisture condensation on the platter which can cause a head crash and make other recovery impossible, but lots of people have reported success with this method, although I have never tried it. Again, if it works, immediately copy all the data off.

If all this fails, you’ll have to decide how much the data is worth. A recovery service may be able to save the data, but the cost can vary from $300-$1,000 depending on what’s required.

Finally if you have a backup, use that and forget the drive and this time buy an enterprise drive with a name you can recognize (not Buffaloe). If you don’t, remember this experience and do regular backups in the future.

Good luck.

To the OP:

Good advice here.

I have never heard anything good about the reliability of Buffaloe drives. If your data is important to you, splurge and buy the best. In the long run you’re better off. And yes, cloud backup is a must for essential data, whether photos or something else.

Globally, my favorite is the Blue Hills outside Sydney, Australia. Near the town of Leura. Great hikes, great rock formations and cypress groves. And, it's AUSTRALIA, Mate. The beer's great, the wine's even better.

Naturally I love Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada range for which she is the crown jewel. As a budding photographer, I learned much from my father at Lake George, NY. An East Coast analog to Tahoe in many ways--especially scale.

Totally agree on Australia! I took 800 photos one day just going to/from Rottnest Island via the ferry from Perth. Weeklong trips up and down the west coast.... so beautiful and interesting. Love the farm art, the geography, Indian/Southern Ocean!

My second place would be San Francisco.

A good post to ponder over. I suspect that most of the rude comments are made by individuals who feel empowered and brave behind the anonymity of their computer keyboards and other devices.

We can all use a lot more kindness in our lives, both giving and receiving.

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of someone who doesn’t think before replying. I know sometimes I have to really work at pausing, and asking myself what the best way is to phrase something that needs to be said without being mean or cruel. It’s a matter of engaging your brain and social skills before you speak (or write). It takes practice and careful thought, which some people simply don’t seem to do very well.

Some attempt to make a point but simply don’t take the time to figure out how to say it kindly. Some others are simply mean, yes. But I think many have simply fallen into bad habits because they find it difficult to express themselves in a way that takes thought and deliberation. The old adage, “engage brain before opening mouth” applies whenever any sort of critical remark is made. There are ways to say such things so that the receiver doesn’t feel belittled, but it takes skill that many people have not been taught or practiced.

If you need to make a critical remark to make a point, first ask yourself how it should be said so that if YOU were hearing it, it would be constructive and not hurtful. Choose your words carefully, and remember that when you are writing a post, people cannot see your face or hear a tone of voice.

Merry Christmas, everybody!!

While I agree that it's a personal preference and an artistic tool, color oversaturation is generally overused if not abused in my opinion. Frankly, it's the first thing I notice about an image and it greatly affects my personal impression of it's overall quality and value. In the examples posted above I much prefer the unboosted images! In fact, I probably would have backed off the color saturation a bit on the raw images as well, but that's just me. All in all, it's up to each of us to decide how far to boost any parameter in post processing and it's pretty obvious that personal tastes vary quite a bit. While there is indeed a place for intense colors and contrast, I do feel that it is generally one of the most overdone/overused parameters used in all of post processing. Good luck and good shooting to all.

I quite agree! I tend to think of photographs as falling into two categories - memorable images of reality, and art. Sometimes the two can overlap, but I like to think of it as, what is the purpose of this image? I like both purposes, but there are times when things just don't look right regardless of the purpose. For instance, if the saturation is so high that it slaps me in the face and draws my attention away from what the subject is, then I don't like it. I think of art as being more abstract than "reality" photos, so if the saturation is high but the subject appears to be trying to capture a real subject, as opposed to an artful representation of the object, the dissonance repels me. This is not hard and fast, because each photo is unique, and I'm only trying to explain what I feel when I'm looking at something.

When I'm making "art" from a photo, I tend to play with contrast and saturation at the same time. Sometimes bad "reality" photos make good starting places for art.

My main point though is that when I'm looking at what I consider over-saturated photos, it has to do with whether the photo is to be considered at at "real". If it is, then the over-saturation gets in the way. Often what I see is a bad mix of "real" and art.

I have the same scanner but have not had your problem (yet). Being an IT person, my first response to this would be to uninstall and reinstall the software. If that doesn't work, then delete the scanner and re-add it, and ask Windows to NOT use the driver already there. Let it pull a new copy and install that one.

What OS are you running? Any updates lately?
