The video is about the damaging effects caused by the distorted realities used by advertisers in order to sell their products. Sure, this video is about beauty products and what they do to "enhance" the model. Do you have any idea what they do to make hamburgers look so good and tasty for an ad? Next time they hand you your food at McDonalds, pull your burger out of the box and compare it with the photo on the menu board! Bet it doesn't look anything like the picture on the menu board!! Talk about distorted realities. Or what about pharmaceutical ads? Beautiful people in beautiful places having a beautiful time, all because of a pill! Distorted reality times 100! The choice of meds should be done by a knowledgeable person, not by someone whose been brainwashed by a multi million dollar ad campaign! Bottom line, if your going to watch tv and endure the commercials, realize what's going on and how your being manipulated into buying their product. Better yet, get rid of your tv and go out and shoot!!

Monitors are transmitted light, prints are reflected light. Images on the monitor have the light source behind the image and with prints the light has to pass through the image and reflect off the white paper. If not compensated for, prints will always appear darker with less shadow detail than what's displayed on the monitor.

My favorite software for shooting tethered is DSLR Remote Pro by Breeze software. You have full control from your laptop and can shoot previews without them being saved. Just finished shooting 950 images for a gun auction catalog using this software. They have a 15 day trial period before you have to buy it.

A word of warning!! I've tripped over the usb cable before and destroyed the cameras usb connector. Canon had to replace the main board in the camera. The repair cost was close to $500. With a bunch of kids running around I would be a little nervous. I now use Jerkstopper from tether tools. http://www.shop.tethertools.com/JerkStopper-Tethering-Kit-JS09.htm or if your handy you might be able to rig something up yourself.

This looks like Joshua Tree State Park - is it?

Joshua Tree National Park. I've been out there a number of times over the years, but this time I fell in love with the place and saw a lot of potential. Now I'm planning on doing a whole series of images.

Correction to "National" park is noted sir - charge it to my head not my heart bro.

I was on an engineering project last year in Irvine, CA - had a chance to see California from Diego to The bay. Took a day trip up to the that part of state to hike in the desert and see Joshua Tree - found some exquisite opportunities for images to capture – here are a few...

Great shots! I think that the fact that this was the first time I've been out there with clouds is what did it for me. Needed the texture of the clouds to balance with the rough terrain.

Being a photographer means having something to say with your camera and evoking emotions from the viewer. To me, that's what it's all about and it doesn't matter if they like the picture or not. Amateur or professional doesn't matter either. You can be a crappy photographer but still make a good living if you know how to market yourself. Nowadays the line between the two are blurred and it's not what makes you a photographer, it's how well you convey your message to the viewer.

with an auction house, there is no end to the items available for props. If you have one nearby, stop in periodically and see what will be sold.

Sensei is right about auction houses! I work for one shooting for their catalogs. Most items are shot on a white background, but for the high dollar items, I get to do beauty shots for catalogs and advertising. For those, I'm constantly rummaging through the auction house looking for props to use. There's a couple of good sites online that host online auctions. www.Proxibid.com and www.icollector.com

The auction house I shoot for deals with collectible weapons and other historical items. It's kinda like working in a museum and getting to play with all the stuff. Here's a couple of samples, including the "Million dollar Luger" which at one time sold for over a million dollars.

You've probably noticed that people are recommending different keys to change the tool in Photoshop using keyboard shortcuts rather than clicking on the tool icon in the tool bar. Since your just learning, it might be a good idea to learn the keyboard short cuts now. It will save a lot of time while working in Photoshop and I highly recommend learning them now so that they become second nature to you down the road. Here's a shortcut cheat sheet you can download. Have fun!!

Find and build your own props and backgrounds and let it be part of the creative process in your art. It's a lot more work, but also a lot more YOU!
