I was wondering if anyone knew any good places in Southern California, near LA or Riverside, to take pictures.

Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, in San Gabriel
Mission San Juan Capistrano, in San Juan Capistrano
Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, in Oceanside
Mission San Diego de Alcalá, in San Diego[i]

The ocean is also always changing I personally love to go to the beach to take pictures.

May I suggest that you join a photography "meet-up group? Go to http://www.meetup.com. Type in your desired activity, the distance you are willing to travel, and your ZIP code. You will be provided with a list of photography meet-up groups within your designated distance.

I live in Long Beach CA. On Saturday, January 07, two of my meet-up groups are going to the Coronado Butterfly Preserve in Goleta CA, where thousands of Monarch butterflies winter-over. Read more here:

I may have mistakenly assumed that you live in SoCal. Do you live locally to SoCal, or maybe Chicago?

I live in Long Beach, and am carpooling with at least one fellow local photographer. As a member of MeetUp.com, you can e-mail to fellow members to discuss carpooling. I have no idea where you live. I am going to drop a PM to you.

Venice Beach is awesome. West Hollywood. If you go further south to San Diego you'll find Balboa Park - beautiful - and the world famous San Diego zoo.

New to this: Bolsa Chica at Huntington Beach, Upper Newport Bay ER. and Laguna Laural as well as Lake Barbara are excelent for birds and critters. Dana Point has the tall ships.

I am a member and leader in the Sierra Club Camera Committee in Los Angeles. This is a wonderful group and we have a monthly meeting every second monday evening at the Felicia Mahaud center in West Los angeles. We have trips to interesting places of all kinds. We have day trips and longer events. In the spring I will be a part of a wildflower photographic adventure in the Santa Monica Mountains and in April I am leading a day trip to the poppy fields in Lancaster. There are many other events that we offer and we go to some very interesting places. Its a good way to learn whats out there and meet other photographers. At our monthly meetings we have a speaker and presentation. This month is a members show where everybody brings in work to show. This is a good group and its open to anybody, you do not have to be a Sierra Club member to join. The information for the Camera Committee is easily found on the internet.
