My first "camera" was a fake that I acquired at the 1939-40 NY World Fair. It had a bit of film attached to the inside of a wooden box and a bit of glass in front, with a shutter. But it got me interested in photography, and my parents gave me a "real" camera - a plastic box shaped like a Leica, with 2 speeds ("Instant" and "Bulb") that
helped me learn a little about things like exposure. My first REAL camera was a Kodak Brownie Reflex with a flashbulb attachment, that I received when I graduated from 6th grade. That led to a lifelong hobby and a series of increasingly better equipment. I agree that digital processing is much more convenient than film processing, and a little easier for me as I approach the age of 95.

When I was in medical school in the early 1950's, the pathologist used an Exacta VX and I looked forward to the day that I could afford to buy one of my own. I finally did, and I used it for several years while I was in the Navy. The camera was great for precise composition and gorgeous closeups, not so great for tearing film. I replaced it with a Nikon FTN.

Indeed. Who owns the copyright to a photograph, the photographer or the camera manufacturer? If I make a cabinet, who can claim ownership of the cabinet, me or the manufacturer of the tools that I used? If any manufacturer of software tried to claim ownership of any products produced by that software, they wouldn't get very far.

On the other hand, if a "woke" individual has a say in any such decisions, who knows what lunacy will be allowed to prevail (the threat is real).

Not so far-fetched at all. Consider the famous case of Henrietta Lacks, a cancer patient whose cells were cultured in a lab, unexpectedly remained alive, and were subsequently used around the world as "HeLa Cells" for medical research. At the time, anything removed during surgery was no longer considered the property of the patient and was either discarded or used for research or teaching.

The first really small full frame 35 mm camera was said to be the Minox 35 EL. I acquired mine around 1975 and used it until the mercury batteries were no longer available. But my most exciting camera acquisition was really my Brownie Reflex camera, complete with flash, which I received upon graduation from 6th grade in 1942.

I am a Nikon (d500 and z50) user but am in the market for a p&s camera that I can carry in my purse or pocket on days I don’t want to carry a larger camera.

I don’t shoot much video but want to be able to capture landscape, architecture, street, and scenery stills in a high quality raw format. I do not need incredible zoom…would be happy with 24mm-70mm range.

Have looked at Sony rx100iii, Canon G7x, Panasonic LUMIX LS100II or the LUMIX ZS200. I want to purchase a used camera if possible , since I have plenty of gear. I absolutely an need EVF that is fixed on camera (which makes me hesitate on the Sony). Right now I am leaning toward Panasonic, but would value input. Price range $400-800. Suggestions?

I have used a Sony RX100-IV for years as my "walking-around" camera. For me at least, it is much easier and quicker to use than my new smartphone. In group settings where several people are snapping pictures, I can take a series of shots while the iPhone users are still trying to compose their first image.

Don’t forget to set the clock on your camera back one hour too.

Or you can set your camera to UTC (formerly known as "Greenwich Mean Time") so it will always be correct no matter where you are in the world.

There is a big difference between a $99 drone, a $400 drone, and a $3000 drone.
My first model, a $90 toy, was defective from the start. I could control the altitude, but not direction, so it repeatedly crashed and ended up in a tree. I replaced it with a $450 DJI Mini 2, which can be precisely controlled and takes good pictures. Look into the DJI line. Theirs are at the professional level, in both performance and price.

I refer to these many items that one sees on Facebook, such as "we are overstocked/going out of business/feeling generous" ads offering a new CANON or NIKON camera with 3 lenses, 2 batteries, 2 memory cards, tripod, bag etc for $99 !!! Is there anything to this ?? or is it some kind of come on, and how does it work?

I had the RX100-I early on and loved it, then traded it for the RX100-IV, which I continue to use as my "walking around" camera. This is an excellent travel camera. Just be sure to take extra batteries and storage media.

I've been to the sub base a few times. The first time was with the cub scouts (so that must've been around 1957 <or so>) and the most interesting event during that visit was when our pregnant den mother got stuck trying to go down into the "Nautilus". I can't see where they would spend $36 million to refurbish it.

I served as a medical officer at that base in 1955, when a nuclear-powered sub was a very secret topic. They didn't let me near it.

The view through cataracts is yellowish. Every patient notices that.

With both eyes fully repaired, I've now reviewed plenty of photos that I have edited in recent years. I see nothing in need of correction. In particular there's no yellow-blue balance problem.

The cataract imparts a yellowish cast, but not every patient is aware of it. I once had an argument with a museum docent over the color of a dress in a painting. She insisted it was green, but I thought it was blue. I didn't consider, back then, that she had cataracts.

If you want a consistent time system, just use UTC (formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time), like military, airlines and ham radio operators.

Those who prefer the Imperial system to metric have to choose between the British and American systems, which are different. That is one reason why the metric system was developed in 1795. Perhaps the US will eventually catch up with the rest of the world.
