Fred;
amazon.com has the T3i with the 18-135 for $799 right now, don't know what Costco has, but if it's anywhere near that I would think seriously about the Costco product. because of their warranty program alone, not to mention all the little extras you get with them.
There is a great site called dpreview.com that you will love to check out. Just don't get bogged down in too much detail for right now. Your just starting out again and at this point I think I would get what's in your price range first. There will tons of stuff to learn tomorrow. Today just get back on the bandwagon, but hang on tight because your in for the photographic ride of your life.

You just described almost every DSLR camera made today. What determines wide angle and close ups is the lens or, more accurately, lenses you buy. There are extreme wide angle lenses to extreme telephoto lenses. Prime ( single focal length ) lenses that are usually sharper than zooms, but not always, and of course they come in all price ranges from relatively in expensive ( $100 or so to over $20,000 ). Zooms the same way.
In general the camera's sensor pixel count determines how large you can print, but that's not the only thing either.
You can't go wrong with any of Costco's dslr's. Well maybe, if they are selling the Nikon D600 which seem to have dust problems. No matter which brand you choose you should be getting a winner for your needs. I would seriously consider the entry level cameras though instead of the more expensive middle to top end cameras. At least until you get a good amount of experience with one of those you will probably not need the bells and whistles that you get on the higher end ( read cost ) cameras. Depending on your previous experience in film of course. Do you have maximum price you want to invest in a starter kit? I say invest because you will run into a far larger accessory list in digital than you ever did in film. Everything from a computer with literally hundreds of free, to costly editing programs to cords, cables and attachments of the never ending kind.
That's assuming you want a DSLR. There are also wonderful bridge cameras that have good pixel count and wide to loooooooong telephoto lens capability for around $300-$400 with almost all the capabilities of the entry level dslr's.
If you decide it's a dslr with interchangeable lenses you want, as before, most any entry level camera will be as good or better than most any of the 35mm film cameras of yesterday. Now wait.....hold your breath.....you will soon here the cry of the old guard screaming fowl, probably in the next post. The digital sensors are so good now that they have had to make better lenses to utilize their sensitivity. Nuff said. Next!

Wonderful detail. Fantastic sensor resolution, very nice, and that's why I thought it was a Canon.
All kidding aside I understand the new 6D is pretty sharp and that's what prompted me to ask. I was kind of hoping.

Thanks Sarge for a great Sunday morning laugh. Now all I need is my cup of coffee. Oh but then I would have to use some of that water the lawn needs. What's a guy to do.

Lucky you. This thing shoots great. I've been toying with the idea of getting one of these bridge cameras. I was thinking about the Canon or maybe the Panasonic, but you just through a monkey wrench into the pile. Thanks a lot!

Didn't say before but this is a beautiful shot. Just a thought, but try a little contrast boost and see if you like what you get. The moon is always fun (if for no other reason than your shooting in the dark and quiet), also you get some real definition when you shoot other than full. The shadows are deeper and really show the moons stuff. Still wondering what lens. I love this one.
