I don't know where Marfa is but extreme NW Texas is the Palo Duro Canyon. It is considered to be the 2nd largest Canyon in the US, but that size comparison is in width and length, it is not nearly as deep as the Grand Canyon. It is very scenic with exposed colored layers on the sides of the canyons and mesas.

Thank you, it sounds as if using Lightroom while keeping photos on an external drive is no problem. It might sound as if I don't trust the cloud. Actually, I don't. Apple began moving my stuff to the cloud before I knew there was a cloud, or what it was. I thought that was odd. Then I was advised that once one exceeds some specified amount of storage on the cloud, that there is a charge for additional storage. Sort of like a subscription one could end up with almost by accident. In some cases I am not comfortable with subscriptions either, although I have a couple that I think are worth the cost. My photographer friends feel that way about Lightroom and Photoshop, which is why I am considering them by subscription. Being recommended by people I know and trust is a definite plus. No one has ever recommended to me that I use the cloud. In fact several people I know do as I do and backup on external drives. So I deleted all my files Apple had stored on their cloud. Then I got a message that is the only information about the cloud that I ever got directly from Apple; if I erased my files from the cloud, Apple would erase those same files from my computer! I would therefore lose my data! That also sounds odd, but I had already made sure all backups were up to date before I erased all my data from the cloud. I will keep that on the list of things I don't know about the cloud while I continue to feel secure that my data is safely backed up on my own little black boxes. I'll ask an Apple tech about his cloud next time I visit the Genius Bar.

The referenced article says an advantage of Lightroom is it automatically stores photos on the cloud. I am curious abut this because I am contemplating getting a subscription to Lightroom, but I have always kept my photos on an external hard drive. Could that be done easily with Lightroom or would it bee difficult to put photos anywhere besides the cloud?

I use Dennis Goodman in Naples FL 239 825 4677. https://dennisgoodmanphotography.com And highly recommend his work, response time, and he is very enjoyable to work with. I don't know if he does mail order work but I assume so. I hope this helps.

Thanks for that, very nice sequence of shots, now I don't have to go there myself! Just kidding about that, your photos make me way to visit there myself sometime.

Just what I was thinking. Too good to be true usually is. What is wrong with it or is it stolen.

I bought a Canon 70-200 mm f2.8 lens for an African safari. I took 2 other lenses, a 600mm prime and and 11-24 wide angle that works well close up and it has also worked well for wide angle panoramic landscape shots with a tripod. I figured I had most distances covered. I think I was right, e.g. when my safari came upon a pride of lions we were so close my 600 cut of lion parts (with all but one shot), but the 70-200 would have been perfect for the distance. Unfortunately I had too much camera gear to get it all in my carry-on bags so I put the 70-200, which comes with padded carrying case of its own, in the middle of my one checked bag and I also padded it well with other items packed in that bag. When I got to South Africa I found a card from TSA informing me that my luggage had been opened and "inspected". They also relieved me of my 70-200 lens. With the extended enhanced warranty I bought with it, it cost me about $1,300. The 70-200 would have enabled me to get some nice lion photos if only I still had it. A long sad story for a short question, but a lesson in how not to pack camera gear on overseas flights. My question is if the f2.8 on my lens the reason it cost roughly twice what the f/4.0 lens mentioned in the first post on this topic?

I will try the lightroom forum, as soon as I get back from my African Safari! In the mean time I have been relying on Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4, but I am aware of the superior capabilities of LR and Photoshop from watching a professional working with it and have been intending to get back to that tutorial as soon as I find the time. Thank you for your prompt response, I will be following up ASAP.

I started the lightroom tutorial but only got as far as the color calibration. I could never get it to generate images with realistic colors so I have never gone past that. I got side tracked with travel and have not yet contacted Adobe for tech support if anyone has any tips on color calibration they would be much appreciated.

Very nice photos. I am going to Africa in a few days and trying to decide what camera gear to take. What were you shooting with for your photos. I had planned to take my 600 mm lens for wildlife, but if I get too close to an elephant I might not be able to frame the whole animal in a 600. I am taking several smaller lenses, down to a 18-24mm wide angle for panoramic landscape shots. Thanks,Ken

I love your photos. I have a friend who is also fascinated with train tracks. He collects RR track spikes, each is labeled where & when he found it; I don't know if he has every state yet. Do you have more RR photos posted somewhere I could access, and send a link to my RR enthusiast friend? Thanks for the photos!
