Is this lens worth $525?
I have seen F2.8 but not F4
Keep in mind there are now two version of the f/4 IS, the original and a relatively new v II as well as a non IS version at f/4. One drawback of the all the f/4 flavors is that Canon doesn't provide the corresponding tripod collar, a $100+ separate expense if you pick the Canon branded collar. All of Canon's 70-200 models are virtually identical in image quality. The vII and vIII versions do resolve better and are intended for the higher resolution of the newest 30MP+ cameras.
Less than $600 is a great price an IS-enabled L-series lens. The hood and caps should be included, not shown in this image and should be confirmed. It's your money. It's your decision. It you let the UHH community spend your money, nothing you have will ever be good enough to their standards.
What is the intended purpose? The 70-200 focal length is a useful general purpose lens, especially for event photography where you have a modest distance between you and the subject. But, 200 is far too short for wildlife and far too short for most sports if trying for mid-field action from the sidelines or the stands. It's a lens I've used at zoos, airshows, and especially at backyard parties, rodeos and similar well-lit outdoor events.

Do a quick search on Ebay. Go to the "completed items" section and you'll see the ones that sold for that and more.
As greyfox said, only you can tell what condition it's in. If you feel it is in great condition, then I would probably feel it is a great deal. Granted it was a few years ago, but I paid at least that much for the non-IS f4 version of that lens and love it. If I didn't already have my current lens, and if I came across a deal like that for a lens that was in good condition, I would probably jump on it.

Going used in excellent condition at keh for about $700, so buyer beware.
This is also an excellent landscape lens! Couple this with a Canon 16 ~ 35mm f.4 L and you've all you need is you bag for the day. Best of all you'll not be overloaded with weight. In my book if the lens you are considering is clean is the price is fair.
I bought a Canon 70-200 mm f2.8 lens for an African safari. I took 2 other lenses, a 600mm prime and and 11-24 wide angle that works well close up and it has also worked well for wide angle panoramic landscape shots with a tripod. I figured I had most distances covered. I think I was right, e.g. when my safari came upon a pride of lions we were so close my 600 cut of lion parts (with all but one shot), but the 70-200 would have been perfect for the distance. Unfortunately I had too much camera gear to get it all in my carry-on bags so I put the 70-200, which comes with padded carrying case of its own, in the middle of my one checked bag and I also padded it well with other items packed in that bag. When I got to South Africa I found a card from TSA informing me that my luggage had been opened and "inspected". They also relieved me of my 70-200 lens. With the extended enhanced warranty I bought with it, it cost me about $1,300. The 70-200 would have enabled me to get some nice lion photos if only I still had it. A long sad story for a short question, but a lesson in how not to pack camera gear on overseas flights. My question is if the f2.8 on my lens the reason it cost roughly twice what the f/4.0 lens mentioned in the first post on this topic?
Just what I would need. Send it in for service and have the Police at my door.
Even if I inspect it and it works perfectly, Probably better to keep looking.

Excellent price, if the lens is in good shape. Canon wants over $800 for a refurbished. Over $900 for a refurbished version II. So $525 is good.
Who is the seller? Is it on ebay or craigslist?

Is it new or used? This lens is selling new on BH for $599.00.
It is roughly 1/2 the weight of the 2.8 lens and much smaller. If you hike a lot this is a significant difference.
Landscape photographers don't usually need a fast lens like the 2.8 version.
Go to BH and select both the f4 and f2.8 and check the "compare" boxes. Then you can do a side by side comparison.
