On our trip to Disney World this past December, I took only my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I got good shots, but I found it was quite limiting. I would usually take my Nikon 850 with 2 lenses. A 70-200 f4 and a 16-35 r4.
I will be going back to that set-up when we return in August. The weight doesn’t bother me too much, I’ve been carrying heavy Nikons cameras and lenses for 50+ years

If you want to be a better photographer, there are two things you must do above all others: buy a mirrorless camera and use it.

Oh, I can’t thank you enough! I didn’t realize that’s all it takes to make me better! I spent a lot of wasted time learning photography. I guess that’s why I have people say, “that’s a good picture, you must have a good camera.”
Silly me, I thought that I had at least something to do with it.

Why do those people who have a choice in a system that still has DSLRs and mirrorless still purchase technologically antiquated and some discontinued DSLRs that came out years ago that will soon not be supported.
They have the option of buying far more technologically advanced cameras for the same money that will still receive service.
Just curious what is the driving force to spend money on old obsolete cameras?

I have 2 Nikon 850s and 8 lenses that work just fine. I see no need to switch to mirror less just for the sake of switching. I’ve been a professional photographer since 1978 when I took the job at Marshall University. I retired in 2020 but still do several freelance jobs, with pay, a month. Including still shooting sports for Marshall. I have used a couple of friends mirrorless and I could not see much difference in the final results. Some day, I may have to switch, but for now I will stay with what I have and may try to pick up another D850. By the way, I haven’t had to have any service on my camera bodies since the 1980s.

I am still using my Tamron Gen 1 lens. Wondering if anyone in here uses the Nikon lens that is in the title bar as I am thinking of doing an upgrade.
How do you like it for image quality, etc. Any pros or cons.
My camera body is a Nikon D7200.
Thanks,
Marsha

My wife and I both have the 200-500 lens. We shot football last season coupled with Nikon 850s
It performed exceptionally well. Sharp and fast autofocus. The only thing we had to get use to was the long turn necessary to go from 200-500. But we soon got the hang of it.

I have used, both the D5, the year after if was introducing until 2020. Since then I have used , and have two D850s. The D5 was a university camera that was one of many I used as the university photographer. A position I held for 41 years.
In my use, the D850s low light performance is as good as the D5. I have not noticed any more noise. I still shoot university football and basketball games. The D850 shooting rate is not as fast as the D5, but still does the job. The extra MPs of the 850 are a plus. I can shoot from one end of the field to the other and still be able to crop close to the action. I use a Nikon 200-500 for sports. Sorry I have never used the D6

I have 2 D850 bodies. It is an exceptionally good camera. I have used 20+ years old Nikon lenses and have never had any problems. The images were sharp, color great, and fast auto-focus. The lenses I used most shooting football were the Nikon 400 f2.8 and the Nikon 80-200 f 2.8. Never a problem when used on the D850.

One day I was watching a music video and I realized that it has, in a way, replaced the photo essay. It used to be that a job at "Life" or "Look" magazine was the photographer's job to die for. Now it seems that that kind of vocation is gone and has been replaced with something altogether different. The photographer stalker who sells his image of a famous personality is apt to represent the high earner in the photographic trade today. And the captured image from an outdoor home video camera seems to be the main device that provides front page news photographs now.

What do you think? Is the photo essay dead or on its last legs?

Sadly, I think you are right. In the 1970s as a student at Marshall University, the other student photographers and I, would look forward to the photo spreads in Look and Life and other publications. We shot for the student newspaper and every couple of weeks we would get a two page spread to do a photo story. Working for the yearbook one year, we did a 16 page One Day in the Life of Marshall University. We had 30+ students taking photos, each with a specific area or person and the university. It was a lot of work developing film, looking at contact sheets to chose the photos to use, but it was a great time. Don’t see that much anymore.

I bought the same camera in 1971 also. It’s still in good working condition.

Those of you who have owned both, what is your feeling? I'm not asking for the all specification differences. . . That is available anywhere and everywhere.

I'm asking for your professional subjective impressions gleaned from living with and working with these two Pro cameras.

Crabs and curmudgeons need not reply.

I have used Nikon Digital cameras since 2001. The D1,D2,D3,D4 and D5 including the H and S models. Since I retired from my job of 41 years as the photographer at Marshall University, I now own the D850. Overall the D5 was the best of the lot. It’s low light capabilities are great as well as its speed in number of shots per second and the auto focus. It had the best camera/flash combination since the F5.
The D850 is a great camera also, outstanding low light performance, good frame rate and the autofocus is on par with the D5. It’s also a great handling camera.
BTW, Marshall University is the NCAA national champion in men’s soccer. They took the title tonight with a 1-nil overtime victory over Indiana University.

Thanks
