You might try BLURB. They do excellent photo books and I have just ordered two copies of one book. They are usually not cheap but are now having a 50 percent off annual holiday sale. For example, I just ordered two hard cover books, 8 inches high by 10 inches wide, 240 pages each, with a PDF copy for a total of $172.90. You can also add titles or text to each photo at no extra cost but I did not.

Bajadreamer,

I guess I was typing while you were posting. Nice shot of the Bufflehead. I know how difficult it is to get the light right to capture the colors in the head.

I am on the other end of the country from you but you might look up Bufflehead. They are small ducks that dive for plant material. The male has a head that is iridescent black in front but white on the top and back of the head. The back of the duck is black and the sides are white. Females are dark and have black heads with a white spot behind the eye on each side. I was just saw some this morning on a pond in Washington.

I believe they look more like Bonaparte's Gulls, with a lot of them being juveniles.

I have finally solved my problem with the Lightroom catalog. I normally keep the picture files on a separate drive and they are referenced by Lightroom when I use the program. In moving to a new computer, I mistakenly copied those photo files into the Lightroom program on the Mac and I could not figure out how to fix the problem. I finally have them back on the separate drive and the Lightroom program references them as it did on the old Mac.

I just want to thank those of you who provided advice while I was having the problem.

Thank you all for your replies. I am going to have to check on it some more. I do have a few comments right now.
I have read some of Adobe online but have not found it helpful so far. I have also read the Lightroom Queen book but have not yet exhausted the web site.

I also agreed that I may have just one set of pictures but two libraries. I now question that. My old MacBook had about 25 GB available on a 500 GB internal disk. The new one now has only 155 available on a 994 GB disk. This makes me think I have copied the photos that I used to keep on a separate disk called PhotoFile 1 and have put them onto the laptop and I believe I have done this more than once as I tried to sort this out. If so, it seems that I have to get those photos off the laptop hard drive and set up Lightroom to just reference these photos from the attached drive.

I have to study this some more and thank you for all your advice.

I recently had to upgrade to a new Mac 14 laptop and am having problems moving my pictures catalog in Lightroom. I followed the "Davethehiker" series about a month ago but my problem is a bit different. It appears that I have my catalog in the wrong place or in two places. I copied my photo files (about 100,000) from a backup disk called "Photofiles 1" to the new Mac. Now, I see on the left side of my screen, "From Macintosh HD" and a right-pointing arrow. On the right side of my screen I see "To Macintosh HD" and a right-pointing arrow.

If I go to rongarton/pictures on the left side of the screen I see the entire set of pictures in the proper folders down below. If I go to Macintosh HD on the right side of the screen and go down to "users/rongarton/pictures/lightroom" I get the entire set of pictures again. At the top of the screen it says "Copy as DNG, Copy, Move and Add, with Copy chosen". So, it appears that I have the entire library on the left side of the screen and the same thing on the right side of the screen. If I go to "window" on top of the screen it shows modules with "Library" chosen. I cannot get out of this window to edit or do anything else.

Now, when I enter the photos program it says to "Click the import button to begin" and I go back to the same screen with the entire catalog on the left and also on the right and no other options to get out of it. If I click "import" it grinds on forever with the whirling ball and seems to copy the entire set again.

It seems that I have all my photos, now with many duplicates, on the left side and the right side on the Mac drive and on the original Photofile 1 plugin drive. On the old Mac, I had the Lightroom program on the Mac and the photos on the plugin drive but I cannot seem to get back to that.

Any ideas on how to fix this and get back to having the photos on the plugin drive and the program on the Mac?

Thanks for taking the time on this.

Ron

Regarding geotagged images, I am using a Mac but I doubt that geotagging is Mac-specific. The program I use is Adobe Lightroom and it is the program that plots the geo coordinates of the photos onto a map. For years, I used a couple Sony A55 cameras that recorded GPS data along with other camera data for each photo. Lightroom can also use data from my Apple cellphone and I may be using that more in the future given that I am now using a Sony A6600 camera that does not record GPS data. I am assuming that I will take a phone picture in the same area as other photos and use those data to assign the location to the maps in Lightroom.

I wish all cameras had GPS built in but that seems not to be the trend.

I was getting a haircut yesterday and my barber pulled out his cellphone to show me a picture of his son and grandson in Alaska. The picture was one of thousands on the phone. The picture could have been better with a DSLR and appropriate lens but, on the other hand, he did not have to invite me over to his home in the evening so he could fire up his computer, attach the hard drive holding his images, and start Lightroom to search for the picture to show me.

He is not likely to do fine art with that cell phone but, as an instant communication device, it is a lot better than a DSLR. I have both and recognize them for their different purposes. Unfortunately, for DSLR fans (of which I am one) there seem to be a lot more communicators than photography perfectionists.
