Much like cats. If you feed them they will come. Doves are not cold weather birds. Ours left with the first snow flake.

You should keep it the way you like it. Critique is a very subjective thing. Although we may try to be objective, our own biases will creep in. I always say, keep what is helpful, dicard the rest. Above all else be confident in your choices after you've considered the alternatives. Read the quote I have chosen below by Ansel Adams. I truly believe in that. That having been said, all you have to do is to fuss with the blue channel to lighten or darken what was blue before conversion.

Thanks. I did fuss with the blue channel and it did lighten it to the point where it looked more like sky. I didn't repost because I've worn the subject out by now. But, your advice was very helpful for future images.

I really like that you have composed this with the fallen tree at a diagonal. I think the image would be stronger if you cropped it so there is less of the background at the top, maybe crop between the two knots or just above them. I would also open up the shadows a little. You have a few blown highlights along the top of the tree. You might be able to get some detail back if you back off your highlight slider. I love how crisp the daisys look on download with the frost on them.
This might have been a good candidate for HDR

I agree here. This is a good candidate for HDR. Lots of possibilities once you did some HDR images. The HDR would certainly tone down the top highlights and bring out the dark shadows in the burned wood. Let us know what you do from here on this image.

Can the student critique the Master? What could I even offer in the way of improvement. So as to offer some critique since it is a critique forum, I'll just say lighten the overall image +1.

Nice. This would be a good one if you could ever shoot it again, to do some photo stacking. If you have a current PS version then its on there. Or, you can buy the stand alone software from Helicon Focus for $30 a year. Your photo would be ideal for that technique. Barring that, to add a tiny bit of critique, maybe tone down the blueish tint. Maybe even raise the camera a bit so you can see further down the tracks.

Only problem is the horse has no hooves.

Here is why the horse has no hooves. When you cut it out, unless its standing on a sold ground, the hooves are generally surrounded by either dirt or grass or bushes. In this case, the horse was originally standing in a field of grass and its hooves were hidden. So, I cut it out the best I could. When I place the horse in its new home I have to use the clone tool to place whatever is surrounding the horses feet onto the non-existent hooves. The same with the goat. It was standing in tall grass with hidden hooves. So, I had to add grass when placing it in its new home.

I posted this in another forum but thought many of you may enjoy viewing this. Its a five image composite. The barn is the original image and I added the two horses, goat, moon and swans. Finalized the image by blending in Nik using the glamour glow filter.

Here is the same barn, converted to B/W using Nik Silver Efex Pro with a different preset than the first image. Some tend not to like the dramatic, dark sky. I prefer the darker sky. Here is another example of what a different preset will show.

Why do you think it's a great subject for b&w? I personally think it is a great subject for b&w because there are so many details that would be lost in a colour photograph. The tracks that were made in dirt leading up to the gate, the scrubby grass, the weathered wood are all details that might be overlooked with colour as a distraction. I think the lighting is very nice, and I do like contrast that you have brought out in post. The light on the trees is very nice as well. The only thing I am having trouble with is the black sky. It doesn't seem natural. I like the framing. It gives the barn room to breathe and the viewers eye is provided with an avenue to travel to the trees out back.
Why do you think it's a great subject for b&w?... (show quote)

Thank you. As to the black sky that you don't care for. In the color original, the sky is a deep blue. I'm guessing the deep blue translated to deep black when I converted to B/W. Not sure how I could make the sky lighter. Any suggestions?
