Please define "scratch" space. - thanks

Like your OS and scratch space, you want your applications on your fastest disk, typically C:. Your data (which should be backed up), can reside on slower storage which CAN be spinning disk IF you have a large amount of data, but with SSD prices/TB dropping in half, roughly every year, there’s less and less reason to do so. Unless you want to use your external as a shared drive on the network or move it to other computers (or off-site), there’s not a good reason to resort to externals for a desktop. Internals will be faster, have better cooling, better power, and it eliminates all the interfaces and cables, which add failure points and increase latency.

This is great. I’m trying recall what the difference was between the Nikon F and the Photomic FTN. Anyone recall? Built in meter maybe?

Yup, Ftn had the meter. Nikon was a system body. The Nikon F was the basic body and the pentaprism at the top was removable. The Ftn prism with the meter popped on. You could convert a Nikon F to an Ftn by buying the Ftn prism. I think there were a few other tops you could get. One enabled you to hold the camera overhead to shoot over a crowd. (today we have the articulated screens)

When Microsoft tried to force me into using Win10, I switched to Linux. I don’t know how Win10 works, but the Ubuntu version of Linux was easy to learn for me.

Mint Linux sees to be the one recommended this season.

I read the page daily and numerous times reference has been made to guides for Nikon digital settings and use, could someone help out an old large format user and list some helpful pages or books. Getting to old to lug my beasts around and have decided to try digital and I am a little overwhelmed by all the different focus types and settings. Thanks

THOM HOGAN specializes in manuals for Nikon cameras. How quickly we forget. You want his book for your model Nikon in addition to any other material. Haven't looked lately but Steve's stuff looks pretty good also.

I went for it. Applied for credit with their PayBoo credit card and waited for a confirmation on the credit.

Made a purchase and then when it posted with Synchrony Bank I paid for the total purchase online as I usually do. The payment posted WITHOUT the sales tax. I am in Connecticut so that is 6.35%.

If its paid before the end of the billing cycle they eat the tax. The purchase amount is posted without sales tax. If you pay after the billing cycle then the sales tax is added. Not sure how it works with monthly payments as an option.

I would recommend that if you apply and set this up, be mindful of the billing cycle so you have enough time to pay. If you mail a check it goes to Florida so you have to be aware of this. For me I payed electronically.

Just mentioning this as sales tax can add up to a hefty amount. I was skeptical of how it worked but after a bit of beginner confusion it went very smoothly.

I think not all states can qualify for this but if you are interested there is a link or two on their B&H homepage to check it out.

Again just FYI.

The great NG photographer, Joel Sartore, has posted many articles and videos describing his many experiences. One of the most important requirements of his Editor is that he photographs at prime times for the best light....early morning and afternoon's 'golden hour'.
I strongly recommend reading or watching his work....He is a born teacher....like so many of you!

Joel Sartore was on a recent episode of 60 minutes.

Thom Hogan is usually considered the premier camera guide. THE camera guide.

I usually get Thom's book and then one other field edition like Busch's

"You don't need VR for a 35mm f1.8 lens."

How disappointing that the newer Sigma art lenses don't have VR! And the new Tamron that was just announced doesn't either.
Cant figure why there is that trend lately. First it's cheaper to make a lens without VR and perhaps they figure that since higher ISOs are quality now, people can take advantage of that. Also these new lenses probably wont need much to offer them for the pending mirrorless cameras which should surely have IBIS in them.

For now, for me I am starting to look back to Nikon's for my pending lens purchases. The ones that have VR.

some years ago there was info about that there were confederate sandisks around I would think that B&H would be less likely to have some.

I suppose a phone call to B&H asking if they source directly from Sandisk and if they have safeguarded against counterfeits

I CERTAINLY wouldn't trust an Amazon partner, or Amazon in this situation

Just some thoughts.
