I quit racing for the latest and greatest.
I started with a Nikon 800e, which was incredible and far better than anything on the market at the time.
There was a break-in, and they stole that, and a ton of lenses, most were quite rare, so I replaced it with an 810, and got the whole filmography suite.
Despite the 810 having more bells and whistles, better processor, etc. The 800E really made better pictures in my opinion. The coloration was more striking.
I have all the different photo shops, and helicon for pairing and control remotely with my smartphone or tablet.
But in the end, any camera will shoot a great picture, that relies solely on the shooter's ability.
My advice would be invest in a technology that will be around for a while, but spend money on lenses. Also look at the development and forward compatibility, as well as backward.
A lot of DX lenses are basically given away now, and with a simple crop, you can get amazing pictures. Even manual lenses that can be used, or even lens stacking (I miss doing that since I got a 500mm). I bought a super cheap nikon 50mm f1.5 lens new for 50 bucks, bought the reversing ring for 30 bucks. I have been photo stacking some macros the even my "professional" friends can't figure out how I shot it. But then again I am the weirdo shooting long exposures or doing stackings chasing a shy bug. Get what suits your needs, has a bunch of stuff to add on and just have fun (even if you shoot for work).

I have a Canon strap for my Nikon D810 :)
It is neck camouflage to get past the Momtographers at insignificant events like the elementary school plays, concerts and swim meets.

I shoot Nikon and when I lost all my gear, I replaced it with Nikon. I did look hard at Canon and Sony as well as Leica for the money I invested, and even considered Hasselblad, which would have entailed a divorce and a selling of a few of my children.
I am not a pro, so I went with the Nikon D810, as I am familiar with the menus and quirks of Nikon. All cameras were really great, But the Sony, I really just didn't like that that much, although the mirrorless was a big plus, the focusing seemed shooting high speed. I have an Aussie friend who bought one after years of Canon and loved it right away. It boils down to personal preference, functionality and style of shooting. Sometimes our tastes change. For him, I think it made the renewed excitement we all felt going out and shooting with a fancy new camera. My general concept it - Who cares what they are shooting with, at least they are out there shooting!

I received this text on my phone, and this person wants me to play the saxophone, I have never touched one in my life. What do I do? I didn't realize you needed to be married to play Brass.

Very true - That's why Nikons included a ball bearing noise in the pop up flash! Canon doesn't have it, Does it affect function or improve performance? no. I am waiting for them to paint red flames on the side to make it shoot faster .

Because I own a Nikon, I am very happy with it, so I get blind to other brands of cameras. I only shop for accessories that work on my Nikon. If I owned a Canon and was happy I would do the same thing.

I have to agree, when I hopped back into shooting, I looked at all the various brands, including Leica. I liked something in all of them, but in the end I chose Nikon. It was more fitting to me, and offered me the flexibility to do the things I wanted. All my gear was ripped off, and I was back at square one again. Again I re evaluated the various brands (being Canon, Sony, Nikon and Leica) and since I had more experience in photography than before, I still came back and restarted with a Nikon D810. Is it the best? no, but neither is Canon or Sony for that matter, these are consumer grade products. The debate is similar to Texas A&M and UT, both a lot of hype to jack up the prices for tuition, is it close to MIT or any of the other top schools? NO, unless you ask a Texan. If no one hyped the product, then there market prices would fall, as the advertisement only works so much, but word of mouth is the strongest form. A 4k usd body would sell for considerably less.
These are mid tier products, and arguing which is the best mediocre product when there are much better products out there is utter folly and a time sink, but like watching Family Guy or South Park, is still amusing.

Here is one of a bee that I "Almost" captured.

Every time I see the picture of the bee, I have a chuckle, it never gets old. It reminds me of I time me and my daughter were shooting macros in Corpus, and she spent about 30 minutes chasing bees, and at the end going through the pics, she didn't have a single pic (all bee parts, or out of focus). The next day it became her "mission".
Great picture nonetheless.

I find that the best of the line Canons and Nikons both shoot exactly the same when you leave the lens cap on.

I have owned both Mercedes and BMW (the German Models - not the export crap that is found in the USA), and Mercedes was better built, in I used to drive my Opel Record and Audi 2000 when my BMW was in the shop (which was always). I drove the Mercedes when dating American GI girls, as it was the only brand they recognised and thought it was posh. Then you get married, lose your toys, ect, ect.. Samsung makes most of the processors, and electronic components. Sony, Nikon, Canon all have them. In the past with film, it was different, but with similar products, you will have same components. Nikon, Sony and Canon are consumer tier level products, not high end. Although very expensive, they are not unique and can be bought off any camera store shelf or electronics store like Best Buy, Fry's and so forth. I welcome brands like Sony and Samsung in bringing their competition, it makes Nikon and Canon get off their duff and start designing better. I prefer Nikon and have some canon lenses like some angry poster was harping on about that I shoot in manual with an adaptor ring.
I like the menu set up better personally, and get better results, plus I can easily distinguish my camera from all the momtographers cameras in the pile at each minor event in elementary school. Canon is the momtographer favorite here, just takes one and they all have big clunky cameras set on auto
