We have a large family (29 including 2 great grandchildren) and getting family portraits for Christmas cards, etc. can be challenging. These photos are taken quickly with me setting the timer and running to get in the picture. That part seems to work well as everyone is laughing to see if I make it in time. Is there a lens that is better for taking photos of a large family that is reasonable in price? I am just a hobbyist photographer with a Nikon D7100 and a D5600 with kit lenses and a Tamaron 16-300mm. I really appreciate your advice.

Last November while shooting the Ms Senior Universe Pageant in Las Vegas, my newly purchased d7200 began to go south on me. With limited time I struggled with the 7200 and had someone run to my gear case for my 'back up', my d5300. She came running back with my 'Nikon p520, P & S'. (oh crap, I thought) that I had not used in over a year, altho out of habit I charge all batteries before a job. Running out of time, and having lost some expertise with this P&S, I threw it on 'Auto', used the onboard flash and .......

This is just one of many, with equal results, for some reason It won't let me put more images in here .... it is untouched, and of course was edited in post. Later, I got some of the nicest cards from them. The p520 saved my fanny. V

Hey everyone, I've been away for a few days and catching up. I appreciate you all. Will be bogged down for a couple of days but will get on all the replies.

I appreciate everyone who, in their own way, tried to help. Thank you again, I will get back to you and let you know what happened. V

Where do you live? Check out local camera shops. Often they can tell you who, nearby, repairs cameras. Often they may even be able to repair it themselves. Beware though, they may try to just sell you a new camera.

Suggestion. Try factory reset. https://seventrumpet.com/nikon-d7200-factory-reset/ It may help.

Thanks Joe. Am 70 miles from Las Vegas, found two repair shops there, both said Nikon won't give them parts to repair imports.

350 miles from Los Angeles, that will be next try after exhausting this.

Will try the link, but knowing how Nikon has put 'the lock' on imports, makes me think it won't help

Thank you again. V

Shopping ebay showed listings in 1100-$1200 range new, body only, I began accumulating money up to $800. Seeing one for $794.95 made me believe 'Somebody up there likes me'. I (too) quickly reviewed listing, noted the 30 day seller return, rating, but missed one word under Mfg warranty ... 'no', that was it, no other disclosure.

40 days after delivery and several shoots for about 8k clicks, it began to act strangely. It would work well for the first 10 - 100 clicks then do things like, not letting me review images taken, not focusing as if the battery was low, could only get from 200-600 clicks on any of three batteries, top panel stays on for minutes after turning off, sometimes would not show in LV where the lens was pointed (showed up & to right about a foot from 8 ft back) but took images to where it was pointed. Stopped copying images on SD card B altho it showed both cards active... and more. It got progressively worse with each use.

I contacted the seller, Photos For Less, who would do nothing about it because they claimed, "...we stated that (it) was an import model". They recommended CPS Warranty Co who want an $85 diagnostic fee + $50 mailing up front (with $85 credited to the repair). I phoned them to try to find out "Should I have it repaired or toss it in the trash"(without investing the $135) and they would not help with that question.

Qs: 1. Should I invest the $135 to get a price, if so
2. At what repair price should I find the trash can, as I still have a 'Gray' camera
3. Does anyone know who else might repair it
4. Any other alternatives?

Thank you for any advice

Hi all I have a Nikon D800, I take real estate photos, I find my Nikon D800 very heavy and was wondering would be a good lightweight Nikon to carry as an alternative. Thanks in advance. Nan

I have a d5300 that is great except it has a focus issue. Sent it for repair and it is somewhat better through the VF but I have to preview every image and it takes too much time. I think it is this particular camera.

Just moved up to d7200 and am so happy with the focus. It is about a half pound heavier and that does make a negative difference. Would have gone for the d7500 but have lost valuable photos in the past. Like the two SD Card slots int he 7200 Really enjoying the low light advantage and excellent focus.

I took real estate photos in the past and used a Nikon P & S. S8100. Worked just great and it will fit in the pocket. Better focus than my 5300. Also use a p520 and p900 (what a trip that is), Both out focus the 5300. Have a friend who has a 3400 and it is super. He uses it professionally with top glass.

Hope this helps. If I were to unretired, I would us a P & S for real estate photos. V

I really doubt that you have a really good one that old. I would rather think the GEM you have is a very poor monitor for just about anything including photo editing.

I've used 5 different ones through the years. The GEM was head & shoulders above the others for photo editing only because it's res was almost exact with the image on the SD card. For all other issues you are correct.

I am sorry but I don't think monitors from the 70's or 80s are any good. The highest resolution monitor in the late 80's is 1024x768.

I guess I just happened to get a really good one. I think it's the low res that helps.

Am using 2 monitors. One is a GEM from the 70s or 80s that was great. The resolution was almost exactly as the SD card projected. The other an Asus, this years model with enhanced resolution.

The GEM is dying of old age. What monitor now on the market will give me an accurate resolution like my beloved GEM? I've tried reducing the res on the Asus but can't get it right.

Thank you

Thank you all. knew you would come through.

How do you feel about the quality (for my work) of the 7500 over the 7200? Is there a better marriage with either and the lens' in Q?

Just watched a glowing video about a users d7500 with the 70-300 VR 4.5. Fantastic images posted of a baseball game. Among the best focus/IQ that I have seen. My Q is, 'Which lens - 70-200VR 2.8 or the above will deliver the best focus/IQ?

I realize the shorter is better for my work (mostly stage/variety shows, low/changing light/flash often not permitted & don't need the extra reach) will allow a faster shutter speed, but the photos posted with the longer were so impressive.

Also, I am considering moving up from my d5300 (poor focus) to the d7200 or the d7500. The 7200 is disappointing because I often use the swivel monitor/side angle on tripod while shooting video. The 7500, top of budget, because it is not a true swivel monitor and has only one card slot.

Would those of you that are familiar with the intended upgrade please let me know what you think? Thank you.

Is it ok to charge camera batteries even though they might not be depleted? I remember a camcorder I bought thirty years ago, the salesman said "Make sure the battery is depleted before you charge or it will never hold a full charge"

They called it 'memory'. Technology has corrected the problem. I charge before every shoot. But being an old timer, I run down the battery every so often, about every dozen charges .... just in case. V
