Just watched a glowing video about a users d7500 with the 70-300 VR 4.5. Fantastic images posted of a baseball game. Among the best focus/IQ that I have seen. My Q is, 'Which lens - 70-200VR 2.8 or the above will deliver the best focus/IQ?

I realize the shorter is better for my work (mostly stage/variety shows, low/changing light/flash often not permitted & don't need the extra reach) will allow a faster shutter speed, but the photos posted with the longer were so impressive.

Also, I am considering moving up from my d5300 (poor focus) to the d7200 or the d7500. The 7200 is disappointing because I often use the swivel monitor/side angle on tripod while shooting video. The 7500, top of budget, because it is not a true swivel monitor and has only one card slot.

Would those of you that are familiar with the intended upgrade please let me know what you think? Thank you.

The 70-200mm F2.8 lenses will always outperform any of the 70-300mm F4-5.6 lens. Especially when properly used. In AUTO mode not as much difference in most cases outdoors.

I own the Nikon 70-300mm DX version. Although it is a good lens, as Mt Shooter stated, it can not compete with any quality 70-200mm f2.8 lens. Pro football photographers would not be caught without it.

Thank you all. knew you would come through.

How do you feel about the quality (for my work) of the 7500 over the 7200? Is there a better marriage with either and the lens' in Q?

I just bought the 7200 and love it. Did a lot of homework beforehand comparing it to the 7500, but in the end, budget, plus my level of photography won over.

You should also consider the Nikon 70-200mm f4. It's a very sharp, light and small (similar size to the nikon 70-300). It has Nano coating, has great auto focus and stablistation. It sells for roughly $1400 (half the price of the new f2.8). It might be a great choice if you don't need the f2.8 (one stop deference). On the D7200 it would be equalent to a 105-300mm lens.

Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 "FL" is a fantastic lens.

Another vote here for you to consider the 70-200 f4. Less expense, less weight, at the cost of one stop less. With modern cameras that one stop is easily compensated for in most cases with an ISO adjustment. As proof, I urge you to download, magnify, and look at Ira's Wood Stork portrait. About as good as it gets! Look at the catchlight in that eye!

I suggest you seriously consider the 70-200mm f/2.8. The other lens has deficits over 200mm, and other problems. This helps prove the concept that the shorter the focal length range, the lens will be sharp through a greater portion of that focal length range. Some newer zoom lenses with a wide range are better in this respect than they used to be, but the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 is an older model. If your budget can handle the f/2.8 lens, that would be the way to go. My policy: buy the best you can afford.

With the low light conditions you are shooting in, the 70-200 f2.8 would be the logical choice. Another thing to consider, since you are shooting in a crowd, the 70-200 does not move externally like the 70-300, it stays the same physical size, as it zooms internally. As for the d7200 vs the d7500, I would think the d7500 would be a better choice, although that is just from the reviews that I have read as I have not had the opportunity to shoot with the d7500. Other choices that you should look into, in my opinion, are the d500 and the d750. The d500 has amazing autofocus, quick and accurate, while the d750 is a full frame camera that will handle higher ISO, as will the d500.

I have the new Nikon 70-300 mm AF-P (new full frame) f 4-5-5.6 lens. I have it paired with the Nikon d7500 camera which I use for close-in birding and landscapes and I am very happy with that combo. I can see it for sports too. Images are sharp and clear, color is rich, focus is fast and accurate, images can have a bit of a 3D look to them especially in good lighting-that might be what you are noticing.

As far as the 70-200 mm f 2.8 lens- you probably can't beat that. However it comes with big trade offs in size, weight and cost. But many buyers seem to overcome that- at least at first. Maybe the f4 version would work for you. It is a super lens. It would be interesting to pair it with the d7500. Hmm, might be worth renting the lens.

For low light event shooting with action you need an f2.8 lens, period. And an FX camera too, if you can afford it. I've shot events with my D750 (FX) camera and the 24-120 f4 and it drove me crazy. f4 just isn't fast enough, unless you really don't mind the noise that a higher ISO would imply.
