I didn't mean to "meanly" send you to a dog like Abe's. It's just that prices are set the same for all new camera equipment from authorized US sellers. Anyone selling for less is selling something questionable, typically grey market. "New" grey market is equipment exactly the same as 'authorized US' equipment, built in the same factory, tested to the same quality standards, but selling at a lower price and without a US warranty. So, if there's a problem that should have been a warranty issue / repair, you're going to have to pay instead, assuming the brand manufacturer will even look at it. Abe's is a notorious grey market seller, so if you were looking at price alone and not support, you'll see Abe's always seems to be the cheapest.

No problem. I usually deal with B&H but might have checked Abe’s out but as with anything it would have been my responsibility to vet them. Since I’m not a GAS person I have at this point everything I need. Thanks for clarifying though.

I got the same email and am trying to figure it out. On my iPhone I have both a RECENTS and a MY PHOTO STREAM album. I ASSUME they were created by the PHOTOS app on iPhone. Photos from My Photo Stream are not editable and will ask if I want to duplicate it and edit it.
I have a windows PC and I’m thinking the images from my photo stream go there into something called PHOTOS that I don’t have much use for.

I always upload whatever pics I want to my PC so not too worried about it. I just wish I understood it!!!! I put the images I want to move into an album I call photos to move and use EaseUsMobiMover on the PC to upload just that album.

I use LR but when looking at images directly from my HD it defaults to PHOTOS and it is buggy. I have fast stone viewer but don’t know it well enough yet to use it.

This is what I dislike about digital photography. All the files/folders that exist and I’m not sure why or how.

From my very limited understanding Photo stream syncs all your photos across all your apple devices but perhaps everyone already knows that.

Thanks because I didn’t get it and would have checked them out.

What filetype (aka extension) are your raw files?

MyPhoto001.jpg is filetype jpg
MySpreaSheet999.xlsx is filetype xlsx.

I’m not sure who you are directing your question to but having gone through several cameras over the years I have NEF(Nikon),
CR2 (canon)
ORF (Olympus)
TIFF (from topaz)
PSD (from photoshop)
DNG
HEIC (iPhone. Only 38)

You never can have too many file types 😂

I am going nuts here with trying to clean up my dups.

I have used and routinely use Teekesselchen. It takes a wee bit of use to get comfortable with it. The duplicate search creates a Collection called Duplicates marking dupes with the same keyword ... Then it's just a matter of you manually vetting the marked images and unchecking 'keepers'.

Recommendation: create a test folder and copy 10-15 images (purposely including duplicate images) from your library into it. Then highlight that folder and run Teekesselchen to see how it works (suggested so you understand dupes are not automatically deleted)

Thanks. I will give this a try. It is for LR, correct?

It should have said NOT!!!

Sorry about the confusion.

Your process sounds very similar to mine. I started my filing system many years ago when I became the family historian. I was using Mac’s photos (or whatever it was named back then) and learned how to create folders in there. I do folders for decades, then years within the decades, then the events - named: YYYY-Event. Because I was doing this for my extended family, I also diligently face-tagged each photo and changed the dates of photos that I’d scanned, the oldest being mid-1800’s.

Fast forward to retirement, adopting the hobby of photography, taking a class to learn the camera, and being introduced to LR. My previous folder system, keyword tags, including faces, all ported nicely to LR. But, I continued to use both apps, now all new photos were going to LR, and any edited photos into Photos. Two libraries! YIKES!!!

At the beginning of the lockdown, I tackled the job and eliminated 30k duplicates. I also took additional LR courses and liked the functionality it offered. But here are a couple of things I learned along the way:

1) until it becomes ingrained and second nature to you…write down your process and refer to it frequently; this includes your definitions of the Star ratings, color codes, and the most critical key words (a post-it on my monitor worked well for me)

2) the sub-folders became more confusing, than helpful for me (I’d frequently forget to check and uncheck the show photos in sub-folders box), so I eliminated using them. Now if I need to separate .jpgs from Raw, etc. I just select file type as an attribute on the folder and limit what’s showing in my window.

Good luck on this journey…it’s a lot of work; but, very satisfying when complete! Happy New Year!!!

Thanks for your comment. I like your thinking. I have assigned the ratings meaning and did put them on a sticky on my computer. I did it for a while but became overwhelmed, sloppy, and lazy!!! After I thin the herd I’m going to have some serious key wording and ratings work to do!!! Discipline is not one of my strong points 😂

Reading through it sounds like different hoggers have different goals which will impact workflow and searchability.

My goal is to continue to use a standard naming convention for searching folders (year and eventname)
Folders contain a minimum of three sub folders (jpg, RAW, modified)
Modified photos are those that have been post processed, posted, printed or forwarded to recipients
Generally my modified photos are the "best of the best" out of the folder for that event.

My goal is now to go back through 21 years of digital photos stored on CD/DVD and upload them onto SSD and sort through them and perhaps post processed some jewels I never knew I had because I wasn't at the point of post processing that long ago due to lack of resources.

Getting a system and sticking to it seems to be the best way for any/all photographers to track and manage their work flow and valuable efforts and time.

Cheers to success in 2022 the big cull.

That sounds like a good system and would save me a lot of grief. I have been creating folders based on subject, Birds, Flowers, etc. What I am thinking of doing is moving files back into more of an event type scenario where the event would be the name of the place taken which would cover a large majority of my pics.

I really like the power of LR keywording and smart collections so I would use that to find all files that are say "bridges" and I can use keywords to identify different aspects in the same image. The only problem is I need to establish a keywording system, THAT I STICK TO (the same with RATINGS), and rekey all photos. A huge task. In preparation, I am deleting all shots that I consider REALLY BAD from both LR and HD.

I copy every image from my SD card, unless they are seriously bad, zero probability of fixing now or in the future, to an external hard drive folder SD CARDS by date so I can always import any file that I want to into my catalog.

I then do the following:
copy from SD card to a HD file called "from phone";
import "from phone" to LR into a file called INBOX adding the date to the file name;

"from phone" folder on HD is now empty and the imported files are in INBOX both in LR and HD with date added. cull and move files in LR INBOX to the appropriate folder. I also create a backup of my HD D:/pictures and LRCAT on an external HD and EVERYTHING is backed up on BACKBLAZE.

I just stared this process this year and it seems to work well but I will adopt your idea of JPGS, RAW, MODIFIED. I have a lot of work to do.

Have a Happy New Year and good luck with those 21 years of images!

Curious...
Do people put copies of images in multiple places?.?
Edit one and you have an unedited version (or more) floating around, ... somewhere.

I put all mine in ONE primary subject directory ONLY. Of course I have to decide what 'subject' the shots fall under. I only make copies to temporary directories for 'sending' to others, then they are removed once sent.
I have no duplicates in my primary image storage/working area.

I find file organization the most frustrating part of photography. Right up there with printing and framing. They both give me nightmares.

I refine my workflow as I learn, the hard way. I many times spend hours comparing photos from two generic PICTURES folders that I’m not always sure where the second one came from; deleting dups and merging the two files. Then I will go to another folder somewhere and find another generic folder of pictures and lose my mind! At this point I pretty much have a handle on preventing this situation. I don’t have tens of thousands of pictures, thank god.

You would think though there would be a good program out there to find duplicates. It really can’t be that hard.

I sometimes come across things I’ve done in the past, both on and off the computer, and wonder what the heck I did. I think multitasking and interruptions from my phone and my cat create some of the chaos.

CCleaner is free and easy to use. You may want to do this is phases
1) "perfectly identical" not need to eyeball differences
Then when you might want to eyeball pairs in the next steps.
2) same name and size in bytes
3) same in name
start it
<tools>
<duplicate finder>
Then check Name, Size, and Content. IIRC Content does something like a Checksum so if 1 bit in 1 byte is changed there will not be a match.

Then go down the page and specify paths and filetypes to include and exclude.

I am going nuts here with trying to clean up my dups.

I did a search here and the latest discussion is from 2015 so a lot of software has changed since then so I am looking for any more current recommendations. I tried one that i downloaded and the dup images they showed were so small I would have had to use a magnifying glass to use it.

I want to do my LR cat as well as photos on my hard drive. I have a secondary cat in LR6 but main photos are in the subscription LR. I STILL can't figure out the naming convention of all the LR variations. It is totally confusing to me.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated and yes, my workflow has improved over the years in an attempt to reduce this problem.

Thanks, Kathy
