Great shots! You got pretty lucky to spot that one. You wouldn't think they would be on the ground during daylight would you? It's sad to see the areas around here now that are all "clear-cut" knowing ones like owls and other birds like woodpeckers have lost their places to live.
The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl that lives in the ground. They use ground squirrels' burrows as their nests, usually.
Unlike most owls, Burrowing Owls are often active during the day, although they tend to avoid the midday heat. But like many other kinds of owls, burrowing owls do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn.
It is a California Species of Special Concern, with populations declining across much of the state, presumably in response to loss of habitat to urban development, ground squirrel control efforts, and intensive agriculture practices that have taken over grasslands.

Yes I would consider it a headache. I really don't want to add keywords, especially now that I have a couple thousand photos that don't have them - to me it seems like it would be a pain in the a-- to go back & add them. I have a system that works for me and I rarely go back to older images anyway.

That's exactly why LR can help you - you can add the keywords while you import and you won't have any additional images w/o keywords going forward.
LR is easier to do this in an integrated way than any other pp program I've seen or used.

If your german shepherd were to attack a full grown racoon, worry about the dog.
Absolutely. They're ferocious critters, not at all cute and docile as they appear.

Thanks, jeanbug.
This is the 3rd time I've gotten a raccoon family, and they're always cute as the dickens.

Thanks, Carol. You're right - they can be quite mean.

Cute, but don't try to pet one.
True, quagmire. They're nasty animals - but their appearance usually belies it.
