You're absolutely correct.
I should have said no full Auto that gives the camera control over exposure decisions.
Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse anybody.

Well gee, my D7000 seems to have a position on the dial labelled "Auto".

The holy trinity would not work for me. I need a longer lens than 200mm for bird photography and I need a macro lens for bug photography and for animal portraits I use a 50mm.

I just upgraded to Yosemite, apple's new os for my imac. Now my Aperture won't open--says it needs to be upgraded in the App store, which App store says it is no longer available. I sort of understand Apple deciding to deep six a fine program they have decided not to continue to support. But to make it unworkable on the new system seems shortsighted and quite frankly a pain in the pocketbook. I am converting all my aperture files to lightroom, but there are things I would still do in Aperture that are superior to Lightroom. So a warning to all hogs--if you want to continue to use Aperture, don't upgrade to Yosemite---unless I'm missing something.

I have Yosemite 10.10.5 and my Aperture 3.6 opens and works just fine. So maybe you did miss something although I have not done anything special that I recall.

Thanks. I will start reading. I have an led ring light but haven't had a chance to even take it out of the box.

So I have a Nikon 105mm macro lens with my Nikon D7000 camera. And I have been taking some nice pictures of dragonflies and other insects. But I have no idea how I would get pictures of, say, a spider face in close up. I have extension tubes and a nice tripod and gambol head. Help me out.

Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions. I appreciate it. We are going tomorrow to check out the GoPro and probably some of the other suggestions.

My wife loves to snorkel and take pictures of what she sees. I am strictly a dry land photographer. She has been disappointed in the pictures she has taken, especially the changes in color underwater. I know some of this can be dealt with in post processing but I also know that some cameras are better designed to compensate than others. So what would you recommend as a camera for taking pictures while snorkelling that requires the least post processing and is still easy to handle and free of problems from being used in salt water?

Definitely a Robber fly. I am not sure about the Hover fly. Can't see the mouth parts and can't tell if it has a waist. But whatever, very nice pics.

You should have that option in Photoshop. It's been a whale but I pretty sure Photoshop will let you add text.

I'm trying to add text to a series of photos. I have an old version of Elements, LR, Aperture, and the newest version of iPhoto. I can't seem to figure out how to add text. Do any of the above allow for this or is there better software?

Since you have an Apple system, just open your photo with Preview. Then click on Tools, Annotate, Text. A text box will appear on your picture. You can type in any text you want in any font you want in any color you want in any size you want. You can also move the box around. And you can do multiple boxes.

I have been in professional photography for 40 years and I have seen some books on nude photography. Some like The Voice Within, for example. The photographer used his wife and all the shots were tasteful and had good taste and class. I have thought about this but have no idea where to obtain a model. Has anyone ever done this successfully.

If there is a college or university nearby that has an art department they may have a list of models.

I volunteer at a local animal shelter and take pictures of the cats. These photos appear on the adoption pages of the shelter and in ads in the local newspaper. My tax advisor told me that I can take an income tax deduction for the photos as a charitable contribution. For a maximum total of $5000 no justification is needed. So the questions I have are: 1. Does anyone here do this? 2. How do you determine the value of a donated photo?.

Some say "Expose to the right" or ETTR. Do a search here, and you'll learn from folks who know more about it than I do.

This is because a little "over" exposure is far easier to correct in Post Processing than under. there is more info in the right side of the histogram than in the left, so more detail can be recovered from blown highlights than blocked up shadows.

You need to shoot in raw to take advantage of this.

That said, your shots don't look overexposed to me.

I do shoot in raw and the pictures have been post processed.
