In regard to the Atomic Bomb photo, it was the use of the Little Boy, and the Fat Man bombs (Created by Roosevelt not Truman) that saved the lives of 30,000 Allied Prisoners of War in Japanese POW camps, and an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 allied soldiers, along with an estimated 1 to 2 million Japanese soldiers and civilians if a land invasion of the Japanese home islands had been necessary. My wife's father and uncle were two of those Allied POWs in a Nagoya area POW camp. It is because of those two bombings that I now have my wife of 50 years, two wonderful children and two wonderful grandchildren.

Sure wish we had photos like these when I studied the fluid mechanics of airflow over high velocity wings at Cal Poly in the late sixties.
In the first photo you can definitely see the sonic shock wave separation and if you look closely at air intake v's and the wing root areas on the fuselage you can see moisture plume areas where the air is becoming subsonic. Photo two, highlights the turbulent airflow behind the sonic shock wave in the moisture condensation plumes. Photo three also highlights the wing tip vortices by the moisture condensation streams at the wing tips.
