I've tried unsuccessfully to download Adobe Lightroom 5.7 upgrade 3 times. After over an hour of downloading I get a message say that it can't be downloaded. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I just downloaded it. It took about 15 minutes. It is a 976048 KB file. The install probably took 5-10 minutes, but I had to re-install as one file was missing. After the "Repair" re-install, everything was fine.

I took this shot this past Spring overlooking a low alpine meadow from way up above. I just liked the view. When deleting old images from my external hard drive this weekend I decided to look a little closer at it (the focus is a little off due to the high winds that were blowing off the snow fields at the time), and I noticed there were two elk standing there looking at me take their picture and I had not even seen them.
Can you find them???

Yes I found them. Very cool scene.

I have hundreds of slides and need to get them to a digital format. Ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. Most are too valuable to just throw away.

I have a Epson Perfection V600 and it scans 4 slides at a time. And yes it does take time, but I get images which display quite nicely on a 23" monitor when scanned at 300 dpi. It can scan at 1200 dpi, but it takes a long time and I don't think you gain much. In my case, I just wanted to have digitized copies of the slides for viewing and I am very happy with the results. It takes an afternoon to scan a 100 slides, but I add dates and descriptions to each image as part of the task.

It's been about a couple of month ago, that I caught one of my girlfriends grand sons playing on the computer (and he was in photoshop). I chased him off and when I came back in an hour later, he was back and in photoshop again. I was ready to kill that s o b. I don't know what he did, but since then Photoshop no longer works, today I finally uninstalled the program and reinstalled it. It did not make a differencse, the program is not functioning anymore. Well, here goes a thousand dollar program, I guess, looks like I'll have to kiss that good bye!

Wow, no password? A note to all. AWAYS use passwords and use complex ones!! Store them in a safe place. And log out when you are done, especially with kids and other people around! Even if the people intend no harm, bad things can happen accidentally. If you don't password your router and your computer(s), you are an open book for hackers as well. I'm looking at buying the 5D. I'm a beginner. I asked my instructor
what camera would be good to get? The Canon 5D it what he has recommended. This is strictly pleasure. Things I like to shoot would be Landscape action and nature. Would love to have some feedback on this camera.

I suggest going to the Web site for some comparisons. I think this guy is pretty good and makes honest reviews:

I'd like to convert some of my old slides so I can manipulate them on my computer and it can be an expensive proposition. I'd like to hear about anyone's experience doing this. I'm interested in the hardware and software and what type of output quality you've experienced. Slide scanners and outsource services can be pricy. I'd like to get the best bang for my buck and not have to mortgage my house doing it..

I have a Epson V600 which scans slides, 4 at a time. I think the quality is great, but be prepared to spend some time, especially if you add descriptions to the pictures. You can add a standard prefix like the date to the name automatically, but then I add further info.

I am thinking it takes about 3-4 hours to do a 100 slides when doing all that. I use 300 dpi resolution which produces a 400 KB JPEG file and gives me a very nice image on my 24 inch monitor even with some cropping or zoom.

Can someone recommend a good camera for a newbie. I want to get good vacation and home pictures with a nice ZOOM feature, but I don't want to have to learn a lot of settings. I don't want to spend a fortune but I don't want one of the cheapie Point n shoots. I also want to be able to buy additional lens in the future. I would appreciate any advice.

The guy who maintains this site does reviews and recommendations which are pretty fair I believe and he breaks it up by category. He does extensive reviews and comparisons.

I was thinking of investing in another lens with a longer reach than the 70-200 canon and the Tamron 18-270 I have now for birding but the prices become enormous to say the least!!!I met a lady looking at cameras in a store and she was looking at the SX50 bridge camera by Canon and she got me thinking about getting one instead. With its 50 times zoom its seems ideal for what I want. I then started thinking about the proposed SX60 due out soon so am waiting for that one maybe? .
I am wondering now why the manufacturers cant make a lens like the one on the superzooms to fit a DSLR at a more reasonable price??? What do you guys think?

Check out Rodger Scott who has taken a LOT of bird pictures featuring birds in flight. He uses a Panasonic FZ200 bridge camera which has a 24x optical zoom. Here is his Web site. Rodger responds to almost all comments made on his site.

Hi all. I am new to Ugly Hedgehog. I look forward to learning more about photography without having to go thru formal classes. It has been a very long time since I had a SLR camera. As I've gotten older, I have been usu
Ing digital point and shoot cameras. But, I want to advance my photography taking and want to get a dSLR camera. I have gotten a gift card from Best Buy and want to get the camera there. I am torn between getting a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 width a nice bundle pkg vs the Nikon D3200 with a nice bundle pkg including a 55-250 mm IS lens or the Nikon D5200 with the 18-55 mm VR lens. Since this will be my first dSLR camera, I am looking for some advice. Thanks. Golfboy

Wow I hardly ever post on this forum but I read it daily. This is Alan interesting discussion, but I have to tell you from an outsider point of view the responses to this guys post were snarky at best. His original complaint, from what I read, was that Nikon could have figured out it was a gray market item by checking the serial, number when he emailed them for a return authorization! which they could have. Pretty sure they had the same computer system when he emailed them as when they received the camera after he sent it, and he wouldn't have had to fork over $27 for shipping. I personally think his complaint is 100% valid. The responses from this forum? "Neener Neener we told you so' not to buy gray market". Way to step it up and offer solutions... He already said that he realized he made a mistake--I counted 3 times if not 4 in his original post.

I originally joined this forum because I love my Nikon 5100 and thought it would be fun to get tips from other photographers. But for the past year when I read some of these posts I feel like we're all back in junior high. I love the constructive answers I read, the snarky responses, not so much.

After a bunch of reading, research and advice from this thread, I am ready to pop for a Dell XPS, w8.1 64 bit, 2TB 16gb. Only one thing is bothering me, everyone seenms to be out of stock on the Dell XPS line except for B&H who is out of stock or has discontinued all of the Dell XPS line and shows what I spec'd out above as a new arrival in stock. Nobody has anything with a SSD. Dell is mid April to build anything.

Is Dell due for a re-fresh on the XPS line (maybe a XPS 8900 ??). Why are there none around in stock ???

I just found out that Lightroom 5 is not compatible with windows vista. So I have to buy a new computor. Would you suggest windows 7 0r 8.1? Any info on this would be helpful. I would like to get a laptop with good resolution. Thanks.

I have a 2008 Dell XPS with a Quad Core 2.66 GHz CPU and only 4 GB or RAM. I have upgraded from Vista to Win 7 to Win 8.1-64 Bit. I only say this to indicate that Win 8.1 can run very well even on an older PC. It runs faster than Win 7 and manages RAM usage much better. I use Lightroom 5.3 - 64bit with no problems.

There are two grips most people have with Win 8. First, it boots in the Metro environment which is mostly for people with portable touch screen devices. (The familiar Desktop screen is just one click away.) The second and bigger grip is once in the Desktop environment, there is no "Start" button. The functions provided under the old "Start" button are still there, but I think they are much more awkward to access in Win 8. Why this is so can only be answered by Microsoft.

However, there is a wonderful and free Classic Shell Menu app you can download and install quickly. Find it at "http://www.classicshell.net/". This gives you back the old "Start" button with all its functionality. It also has many options available, one being to allow the PC boot directly into the Desktop environment so you can bypass the Metro screen. Both environments are still available to you so you can go back and forth if you like. That little application is like gold to me and I think you will find it is worth a tip to the developer.

I have had few problems switching from 32-bit Win 7 system to a Win 8.1 64-bit system. My old Epson Photo R340 printer and Epson V600 scanner work fine and I can share printers and files with my family's Win 7 PC's and laptops. I can even run some of my old engineering programs compiled years ago under Win 98!

Whatever you do, make sure you get the new PC with Win 8.1-64 bit. I would also recommend 8 GB of RAM, but I seem to do fine with 4 GB. Also get the biggest HD you can afford. A 2 TB would be good.
