Hi all. I am new to Ugly Hedgehog. I look forward to learning more about photography without having to go thru formal classes. It has been a very long time since I had a SLR camera. As I've gotten older, I have been usu
Ing digital point and shoot cameras. But, I want to advance my photography taking and want to get a dSLR camera. I have gotten a gift card from Best Buy and want to get the camera there. I am torn between getting a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 width a nice bundle pkg vs the Nikon D3200 with a nice bundle pkg including a 55-250 mm IS lens or the Nikon D5200 with the 18-55 mm VR lens. Since this will be my first dSLR camera, I am looking for some advice. Thanks. Golfboy

Have you held the SL1, D3200, or D5200?

If you can foot the bill for the 5300, that's one I'd go for.

Too much money for 5300. Size is not that important for me. Quality of photo first and then options.

If it is not comfortable to hold - you will not like it

Go to a BIG BOX STORE and try them on for size. Then check out either B&H or Cameta for a nice package. You can even call the two and they will set you up with a custom package.
If you have the money, add the 55-300mmVR Zoom. Nice zoom foe the $$$$. Also consider PayPal's "Bill Me Later" service.

Golfboy, welcome to the Hog.
That is the age old question. When just starting out, the brand doesn't seem to make any difference. But as you get more advanced, it starts to come more into play. After a lot of research, and for specific reasons I won't go into now, I decided that Canons had several important advantages over the competition, so I started to invest in the Canon system.
Canon sells 30% more DSLR's than the next nearest brand. Some like to say its all marketing. It's not.
My recommendation is that you invest in a Canon, and just get whatever you can afford. Short of a few physical limitations, you will get used to how ANY camera feels.
Again, welcome to the Hog and enjoy your new Canon! ;-)

Lots of good gear out there - it all depends on your budget. Look at Sony too....they are inovative as well as making sensors for both canon and nikon!

whilst you are learning most cameras will produce similar pictures. difference comes in the cost of good lenses and what 2nd hand gear is available to you in your area. In the UK Nikon is the most expensive!

not even going to say who'se best....way too subjective

As has already been mentioned, FEEL is a big deciding factor in buying a camera. But never pay more to get less, always be aware of the features and capabilities of the gear you are comparing. Two websites to check out for side-by-side comparisons are:
http://snapsort.com/

and

http://www.dxomark.com/

You can enter any two cameras you want into the "compare" function and see exactly how they do compare, ergonomically, technically and price-wise.
Good luck and don't let politician sway your decision with rhetoric and "opinions", get the facts for yourself and make your own sound decision.

Welcome!

About how the camera feels, I would say that it is important that the camera is not uncomfortable. Beyond that, I think you will get used to any camera and its menu system.

Between the Nikon D3200 and D5200, I would get the slightly better D5200. The 18-55mm lens will serve you well to start, and you can add a second lens when you have a better idea of what you like shooting with the DSLR. The biggest advantages of the D5200 is a better AF system and better access to controls.

Between the D5200 and the Canon SL1, the testing shows that the Nikon has better image quality. Either one gets you into a system which should serve you very well for a decade or more.

Enjoy your renewed photography journey! :-)

You might also consider a Sony. You didn't say how much you planned to spend but Best Buy currently has the A3000 on sale for $500 and it includes a 18-55mm and a 55-210mm lens. The camera has great reviews and Sony's menu system is very easy to learn.

My advice would be, don't let someone make this decision for you based on brand. Write down what is important to you to have in a camera for your purposes. Then go by that list, make sure that camera also feels comfortable in your hand. Those that tell you buy Canon or Nikon are probably not going to be very helpful for YOU. I myself get opinions from here about things I am interested in buying, lots of times people are very helpful. Someone on here already gave you good advice, I don't drop names but he is an experience Photographer and owns his own store ;)

1 o to the store.
2 get a salesperson who is not in a rush.
3 take some in store shots with each.
4 flip- a coin and take the winner home.
by next year you will know what you need.

Welcome to UHH. Go to a store like Best Buy or Costco and see which one fits your eyes and feel. Canon and Nikon will serve you well and both have great lens selections and will assist you in obtaining quality photographs. I cannot speak for Canon but I have really enjoyed my Nikon equipment. The difference between the two is a no win argument, except with Sharpshooter who won't budge. Good luck and have fun.

Take your time. The feel and button position was one of the deciding factors to me. I'm not advocating any brand, but, Nikon has an abundant amount of refurbished cameras that some say are better than new. Your choices are good entry level place to start. If you can't make up your mind, check out the Nikon D3000. For $199, you get camera and 18-55mm lens. It's vey basic by today's standards.

What are your favorite colors? You don't want to wear something that will clash with either the red ring on Canon lenses, or the gold ring on Nikkors. All kidding aside - they are both good - and neither offers any significant advantage over the other - you will get amazing pictures from either. As your skills progress and you start to specialize in shooting one kind of subject, there "may" be a slight advantage, mostly on paper, for one over the other. But I wouldn't worry about it, nor would I pay any mind to anyone who says otherwise.
