I've done this before for about a 1/15 of a second for a group photo to enhance the background people where the flash was to weak but never for three seconds. I gotta try that ghostly look. I think this shot is a really neat idea. Especially at night or twilight.
I have used a hand held flash and walked around the yard photographing a tree and used about three or four flashes of the tree at different positions. The camera was mounted on a tripod and set on bulb. I wore dark clothes and these shots came out pretty good. I need to try this out again when it warms up.
duneshot/Bill new guy here (been a lurker for some time)
I think you probably focused on the workman's shirt and that's good. My dad used to have a stick that he placed on the subject and focused on that which was ok and worked but he then used the DOF calculator on the lens to give the DOF he required and then set his speed accordingly. I would say that the manual should be studied carefully (they are on the internet) A tripod is required equipment also. once you get the hang of manual you'll never understand why automatic was used. Film developing is great and simple. Scanning the negative is easy and then processing the print is endless beauty. Once there you're hooked on a great art form.

I like the subject matter in your first photo, your pine cone. The snow on the branches really make for a super background. A well done capture. A wall hanger for sure. Have you tried this shot as A B&W ??? Winter and snow can create beautiful captures for a photographer.

I mustered out of the Naval Air in 1956 as a Training Devices Man 3rd class from Hutchinson Naval Air Station, Hutchinson, KS. I taught celestial navigation. I also worked on the flight line as a plane captain on a P2V Neptune. Many years later I became a civilian pilot.
The photo that was taken, from the pier, looks like it could be named "The Start of a New Day"
