I've bought a new Canon Rebel T3i. An extended warrantee was offered. I turned it down. Retailer (Best Buy) said I've got 30 days to reconsider. I think they were offering 3 yrs, $15O. Includes annual cleaning, and repair from dropping and getting wet. Deal or No Deal?

150 bucks compared to the cost of a new camera. Simple to me.

When I worked at Adorama (25 years ago) we use to love to sell the extended warranty as we made extra money for each one we sold. If you purchased with a credit card, most credit cards give an extra warranty. Also, who is giving the extended warranty - Canon or Best Buy. I wouldn't trust Best Buy techs with my camera - I might be prejudiced, but I rather have Canon or reputable camera shop fix my canera.

Yeah, I haven't heard good things about the "Geek Squad". Seems like there is one reputable after market ins company... Can't remeber what it's called. Anybody? Anybody? Bueller?

Generally speaking, extended warranties are a rip-off. Not surprisingly, my default answer is no---don't buy the warranty. You should be able to determine if the camera has a problem within the first 30 days. Beyond this, Canon has already included a warranty. Just my two cents.

When the children were young, we had 7, my policy was, "If a child touches it, buy the warranty" That plan cost many retailers a tidy sum.
In your case however I think not.

No Deal!!! Extended warrantees are just money makers for the seller.

Save your money. Learn to be careful and clean and you probably never bring it in for service. No reason why you cannot clean the lens yourself.

I have been using Canon's for over ten years and brought only one back for warranty.

If the warranty actually covers water, check how wet, it may be worth it, also check who does the service, will they replace if it cannot be fixed? On good cameras and laptop computers I tend to be more likely to buy the service plans , also a function of how many $$, if it goes over 10% I think very hard, Bob.

I have a T2I bought at Best(?) Buy. Got the extended warranty. After 9 months I took it in for a cleaning before taking a vaction. That way I knew it was clean and I wouldnt have any bad pictures. Although it didnt really need it but it was under warranty and the camera was working just fine. After around 10 days I get a call telling me that it was "UNREPAIRABLE"?????. So they tell me they will replace the camera. NOW I ask how can a camera that was working and goes in for a CLEANING and comes back as "UNREPAIRABLE". They tell me that something was found on the sensor that was not cost effect to repair.(not so by canon). They replaced the camera and then wanted me to buy ANOTHER warranty. I talked with the manager telling him that it was not my fault that they camera had to be replaced. After going back and forth they finally continued my warranty.
Through out all this I called Canon to see if they had a record of my camera coming in for a cleaning. They did not.Seems Best(?)Buy sent it out to a place in Texas that was not authorized to repair Canon cameras. They told me that this has happen before and really could not say anything more. Canon told me while the camera is under their warranty that I should call them and they will tell me where to send the camera for them to fix for the first year that they are coveing it and not to take it to Best(?) Buy. They also said that the only way a camera was NOT cost effective to repair was if it went into salt water for an xtended period of time.Other than that they could almost fix any other problem. But should the camera be beyond being able to fix they have a buy back program as to where they will give you a very nice discount on the next model up camera you buy from them.

My fortune teller sees me havng an accident in the near future with my camera and having to have it replaced. She has never been wrong yet.(Best(?) Buy's warrant covers damage from accidently dropping)
