Thank you for you kind words.
Back in art school days I always tried to use a photo for pencil and ink work.
I still have my Original Polaroid bellows camera but no one makes film for that camera.

Nice work on all three images, the BW has the most detail. I call your attention to the man by the Columba restaurant sign the man in the white shirt and tie is sharper in the BW.
All excellent processing.

Ok, I will be brave here and I realize this may start a "Holy War" but here goes. Does, or has, anyone ever used software to convert their photos to Sketches or Paintings?

I have been playing around with this and it is a lot of fun. I know, there are purists photographers and purists artists who condemn contamination of their art by non "Professionals" but I am not saying to do one or the other; just try them. Some photos that you are thinking of putting in the trash may be quite nice as a sketch or painting.

I have been using Akvis programs and they work very well. My only bone to pick with them is that they use an assault rifle picture in their tutorial for their sketch program. I have written to their support and suggested they use something else because to me, assault weapons are not what most photographers and artists hold dear to their heart. They don't seem to be anxious to reply to my wishes or even address them. Too bad, because I think their software is decent. I know, you can do the same type of things with other software but I have found the others to be lacking.

I have used almost all of the mentioned software for years. The results are never to me what I want so I use them in layers and blend the results. As for Corel essentials it is priced well.
I am almost 80 and still work as a part time instructor at a Community College. So a tip for everyone is enroll in some class and get a student ID you then can purchase at a huge discount on line or from school. I have posted many pictures here on the Hog with my efforts.
You will soon learn that you will have to use brushes built into Photoshop or the artistic software that you use. I would like to mention that Corel Essentials leaves a boarder around the image to get around this I just add to the canvas and crop later.
If you would care to view my Flickr Page the link is above go to albums and flower art, My user name here is User name: Ronald540.

Hi Everyone: Just saw a Tony Northrup You Tube in which he says my Nikon kit lens, 18 X 55 can only resolve 9mp in my camera which is 24mp and that because of my cheap lens I am losing effectively 15mp. He says this comes from a DxO rating on the lens. Is this true?

Perceptual Megapixels, P-MPix for short, can be described as the “equivalent” number of megapixels when using a particular lens. ... This means that the resulting photos are equal in sharpness to an 18-megapixel camera shooting with an optically perfect lens.
https://www.dxomark.com/About/In-depth-measurements/Measurements/Sharpness
https://www.dpreview.com/articles/8671938754/dxomark-introduces-perceptual-mpix-score-for-lenses
My lens on a Nikon D750 is a 24-120 f/4 perceptual Sharpness 14mp.
My 24-70 f2.8 is only 17mp closer match to the 24mp sensor.
On the 810 it is 21mp.
Good glass is always better than a new camera...
Tony was for years an engineer for Microsoft. Has written all of their books used in the MCSE coursed of which I am one. His math has always been sound.
At almost 80 I still teach in the IT field, so I guess I am a fan of Tony Northrup.
What does this have to do with photography; it depends on your perception.
It’s just math.
The question is can you tell with your eye???

I am looking to purchase an "L" zoom lens. Brand new it is $2099. B&H has it for $1799. Canon refurbished on their website it is $1679. Lens Authority has it for $1470 with cosmetic rated as excellent and glass rated as excellent. Performance says passed. Would I be taking a big risk trying to save $200 going this route? I checked the forum and didn't find much and Googled reviews on this company. I have purchased both my cameras and all my lenses through Canon's refurbished site, but I wanted the opinion here on UHH. Thanks in advance.

LensAuthority.com is a stand-alone company founded by the same people who founded and operate LensRentals.com.
Purchased a Nikon D700 ir converted from them, it was as advertised.
Hope this helps.

The subject lens can be purchased for under USD 200 from ebay, which seems like a bargain for a Canon L-series lens.

It's my understanding that this is one of the first EF L-series lenses, placing its introduction in the late 80s? So, it's old technology, but Canon certainly had good optics back then.

What kind of performance could you expect from this lens? Obviously it's slow (f/5.6) but what about chromatic aberration and sharpness?

Thank you for any feedback on the expected performance of this lens.

Jason

I owned one of these lenses years ago and it was noisy and slow, but for macro work it was Steller, that what mostly what I used it for.
