Nice image, it does look like a swan impression. However I don't like Blue Herons. They eat the Koi out of my garden pond. I think they wade rather than swim because I have been told that the best defense is to put up a fishing line barrier because they walk in rather than fly in. They feel the line and turn away.

I've only seen one swimming once or twice. They definitely fly in, then wade around.

For what itโ€™s worth I have seen similar poses when GBH was wading out to bathe.

Pretty deep water in this case, but would be a cool view when wading.

Thanks all
I was wondering about the bright green and even the brown area. I may crop the brown out. Toning down the highlight and vibrance on the bright green would be easy enough.

Great Blue Heron on the retention pond in our backyard, Wesley Chapel, Florida. You don't see them swimming often. They usually wade and fish.

As you weigh your options and purpose, consider if you should be looking instead at a 400mm prime or the older 100-400L. Both lenses used will be in your current budget and compare favorably for handling, image quality and price to the 3rd party zooms, especially for your older model 7D. If you're thinking about subjects typically at the focal length maximum and non IS is not a dealbreaker, definitely put the 400 f/5.6L into the mix.
Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
I probably need a telephoto, especially with wildlife. Focal length could be variable, and, at times, I may not be able to maneuver myself much. Also, hand holding will be required at times, so would really like IS.

Looking for more reach. I can currently go to 250mm, 1.6x cropped sensor.

Photo enthusiast with some minor selling on the side. Canon EOS 7D. Thinking 150-600mm zoom. Prosumer, Maybe a Sigma or Tamron, Refurbished or used (if decent cost savings)
I've seen about $750-900ish (USD) so far, but can't help but think I can do MUCH better.
Person-to-person type offers are preferred locally, face-to-face. I live in Wesley Chapel, Florida.
Open to all advice, but maybe more so, places to get one. I'm researching myself and probably covering the common sources, but if someone has seen a great deal...
Thanks in advance

Maybe remove the distracting stuff in the distance just above the leading horses' heads. And make the rear jockey less eye-catching. Is the aspect ratio fixed? If not you could crop in a little from the top (and maybe a very small skim off of the bottom). A more elongated frame would enhance the feeling of movement and speed.

Thanks. Will give it a try.

This is a good photo with commercial value. I would not sharpen anything and let the sense of motion speak for itself.

Good luck

Thanks
