A question like Is raw necessary on an open forum with photographers from the entire spectrum will always provide strong mixed reviews. It's up to the individual to determine if the juice is worth the squeeze. If one takes a lot of landscapes, and are willing to put the time into learning raw editing then they will clearly see an improvement in their end results. Heck just the using the highlight slider in Lightroom can restore what initially appeared to be a blown out sky. YMMV

If you mean to grade you are better off shooting everything neutral and at low contrast, to give you maximum latitude in post. If your camera has slog2 or slog3 those are best, otherwise set saturation and contrast low.

I agree. I use Flaat 10, Cineflat, Tassin Flat and Alvaro yus profiles. in D7100. The 800, 810 offers a native flat profile not available to the 7100.

Here is more information.

P.S. I just ran the same 30 sec. clip in Premiere pro and it used 85% or less CPU, so it never sputtered or stopped the video or the audio.

Yes, I presume you are correct. I am using a I7-4770 CPU @ 3.4 GHz ASUS, I had to upgrade the stock GPU to a Nvidia 750TI. for it to do any kind of video work. The entire PC can be had for under $1000 these days. I don't stutter in Resolve. I do have to transcode from H.264 to (usually) DNxHD for composting and planer tracking. I also transcode my Sony Camcorder footage (.MTS) before doing any editing I I use Cliptoolz (also free. Cliptoolz also has scopes.

Samuraiz,
I tried using Davinci for a couple of hours. I downloaded the free version. I couldn't figure out how to use it. I downloaded the 1,000 + page manual and went through the first three chapters. I couldn't even figure out how to load a clip. I presently use Premiere Pro CS6.

Yes I agree, It's not intuitive. however, it's extremely powerful. This may help

I know that this is an old post however, Blackmagic provided Davinci resolve lite for free. The limitation of lite will not be noticed by the hobbyist.

It is good work, maybe not to everybody's taste, but well executed. To me it appears to be "enhanced reality" which is something that photographers do in many ways, with lenses or selective framing or many other tricks. It's all about creating an image, unless you are trying to create an archival record, and even then it is usually a moment in time captured from a single viewpoint.

These appear to be HDR images to me, and probably a few other techniques, but I see nothing wrong with the end results. I also remember some visits to northern Scotland with amazing light and intensity of colour, without any enhancement from creative effects, just stunning to the naked eye. It wouldn't surprise me that Iceland could offer even more.

I don't like Rap much, nor classic opera, but it doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with either.

Frequently, a discussion begins with a person claiming that Photoshop (generic) ruins photos and only SOOC is a pure photo. Wrong on both counts.First of all, if a photographer shoots in JPG, then the camera "PROCESSES" the photo using an algorithm selected by the photographer that they think complements the subject. IF the photographer shoots raw, then the photo must have post processing before it can be printed or displayed. SOOC is akin to neutral, positive transparency film (slide Film) (if this medium is to be printed then there will be processing performed) A Polaroid is SOOC. For those that remember the joys of BW wet photography. SOOC is the equivalent of a contact print on medium contrast paper and an average time in the develop tray. Only if you are a crime scene photographer or a news photographer then you do not post process.

What these entertainers that sang anti war protest song have lost site of how things work.. In fact they got it ass backwards A service man is a well trained tool whose only profession is to protect Americans, and the land', and their philosophy

A service man is like weapon in your safe. It will stay in there for eternity unless it's commanded to fight.

The People that sent this boys in harms way to fight a purely fiscal related to energy and present and future assets

I'm not sure why this is a 18 page worthy discussion. Some people prefer acoustic music some prefer electric, some like sail boats, some like power etc. There is room for everyone. realistic is subjective.

Yes I agree 100%. It seems that the People have a memory that more or less starts to fade after a few years. After a party becomes too powerful to some peoples liking, they quickly vote the other party back in. And that would be the party that they voted out before. Over and over again. Another troubling aspect is that the media is under no obligation to present an unbiased truth. I guess sensationalism is what lures in viewers to Editorial/Opinion shows that are presented as news.

I have been doing video now for 10 - 15 years, just holiday stuff. My current camcorder is a Panasonic NV-GS75, about 7 years old, 4:3 format. I need to get into HD so that I can produce videos in a 16:9 format. I am a stills photographer really, a lot of what I am reading about HD video leaves me more confused than ever about the technical side.

As usual in these cases what I should do and what I can afford now I am retired are not very close. Do I upgrade my Canon 450D / XSi to something like a used 600D / T3i or go for a low cost HD Camcorder?

I think I may have problems editing 1080p video on my laptop so it would have to stick to 720p.
Laptop: Acer Aspire 6935
Intel Core2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz
RAM: 4 GB
Windows7 64 bit
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS
I currently only have 20GB left on my external drive and the C:drive is a SSD 125GB

The CPU is not changeable, the RAM is at its maximum.
I have Premiere Pro CS6 and Premiere Elements 12 and Serif MoviePlus X5 to chose between for editing.

Is there anyone on UHH who has experience editing HD video files?

A big benefit of the DSL method is that using a DLSR with regular lenses you have full control over DOF, Aperture and Shutter speed. Most camcorders with their ultra tiny sensors seem to have every thing in focus from 2 feet to infinity giving everything that camcorder look.
