I have been keeping an eye on this post and I need to set the record straight. I personally have never been attacked or criticized on UHH. If I received feedback, it was helpful and I was grateful for the input. I also had no intention of singling any particular member of the forum. There's more than one guilty party, so please stop attacking specific individuals.

That was not my purpose in wanting to leave the forum. To clarify, I am very disappointed in the negative comments, and attacks on others that I have seen. (For example, JR1 and Annie Girl have been attacked relentlessly.) I have noticed some comments that were derogatory to other nationalities, (French speaking) or religions (Christians and those who mention God in their posts). As a result, I just feel that my reading the posts is not a productive use of my time. Maybe it's time for a change - no more personal attacks, or nasty comments. Just constructive criticism, helpful advice and fun are required. Wouldn't UHH be a better forum? In fact, the world would be a better place if we could use the same rules towards everyone.

I have made the difficult decision to leave UHH. Why? There are too many members who enjoy making negative comments to other members, or who spout off advice when they really know very little about the subject. I find those people unpleasant and a waste of time. I thought I would just leave, but I realized that wasn't fair to those who are helpful and positive. To those who help others so often, you have helped me learn new things about photography. I thank you. Good bye and good luck.

Annie,
"...I come to this forum because I have friends here, I enjoy talking to others about photography, I enjoy helping others improve and believe it or not I learn some techniques and tricks from members here."

Well, that comment has a totally different tone to it then your previous one. That's more like it. And by the way, I don't find it hard to believe.

Oh for Pete's sake, why has this thread descended to another attack on Annie Girl. If she doesn't want to share her web-site or photos with UHH, it is her prerogative. Perhaps, we should go back to the original questions?

Firstly, rarely does selective colour look good. As for vignetting, a little darker vignette can be effective to highlight a subject, but the white vignettes turn me off. Most times, vignettes are unnecessary. Good lighting can accomplish the same thing. As for props, a little can help, but most are overdone, and it doesn't say anything about the baby itself. Having said all that, to each his own. Anne Geddes used props in her baby photos, and she has made a big name for herself. Not my style, but it has been successful for her.

i've only read book 1 - and am looking forward to book 2. this was great, my kind of book.

some background... i don't have a digital camera, shoot only b&w film, so my needs are a bit different. (YES, i think digital camera's and photography is superb, maybe i'm a dinosaur - i'll explain some other time.) i just won't be able to post pix.

as d. chemin says in the intro, it's intended to be about things that didn't require going out and buying more equipment. it lived up to that and was really helpful... for any photographer. i found each of the essays tight and well-written. in thinking about the book as a whole i liked the essays that fit "my" style of photography and realized the the others would be techniques out side my "comfort" zone, useful and a challenge.

some of the least useful for me (for obvious reasons) "tame your digital exposure" (use the zone system and spotmeter, no digital); "power of the print", (only produce prints)...

some of the more useful, "create projects and collaborate"; "making stronger portraits"; "slow down and learn to see". things that i forget over time and need to be reminded of.

the greatest take away for me from all of the essay's is emotion and time. i need to take more time to make an emotionally connection with my subject!

i look forward to you thoughts...

great book, now onto book 2.

Hi jvo - If you have a scanner, you can still post pics. I too like to work in film. I use b&w medium format, 120 film, with "toy" cameras, or twin lens cameras. I am going to work on dolls in that format next week. We would love to see some of your work. I will try to post more pics later when it's not so busy!

Interesting discussion. I still think I will stick to what I like. I hate blown highlights and noise.

These are two of the photos that I took.

I said I was going to work on a single topic. I chose to photograph dolls. I am posting a couple of them for discussion and critique. I haven't edited these yet as I would like to shoot photos that are dead on and require very little PP. Just a personal preference. I would like to see what people think I need to change. As well, what are your reactions to the photos? I forgot to post the photos so will do that below this post.

Has anyone done any photographing to try out some of these ideas? Are we supposed to post some pics?

I was always told about the bell curve as well. More reading and experimenting I guess.

I came away with you should expose to the right but don't spike on either the right or the left. This is the first time that I have read that there is more information to the right, but that makes sense to me. If you expose to the left you risk lots of noise and loss of detail. I need to read more.
Yes, rereading the information, it did say that. I will need to test this out for myself because I think it would be easy to blow out the highlights.

I sometimes look at the histogram after taking a shot if I am unsure of the exposure. I definitely would not check each shot. Too time consuming for my liking. I am not sure I understand what it meant by exposing for the right side. I always thought that if you were too far over on either side, it meant that you were overexposed (right) or underexposed (left). Am I incorrect?

Eveline,
I don't really know anything about Pinterest, but If you gave me credit, I'm good with that. I could use a publicity agent.

Pinterest is a pin board on google. It's great for saving photos and fashion etc. that you like. Everyone can access it, but you are allowed 3 secret boards. I definitely gave you credit. As for the marketing part, I could use a good agent as well. I have lots of really lovely photos, some marketable, yet I haven't tried to sell. It just seems like so much work! I am considering a web site, and really liked the weebly format. I might work on that this fall. It's a start. Good luck with your new venture.

Hi Cheryl. I really liked the web-site. The photos are great, wonderful light and composition. They are definitely marketable. The pics loaded quickly and easily and it was easy to find the categories. I even pinned a couple of your images on Pinterest. I hope you don't mind? I figured you would get extra coverage by doing so. If you don't want them there, please PM me, and I will take them off immediately. Nice work!

A phone will not give you keeper photographs. These photos are for playing. For what purposes are you using your camera? Would a good point and shoot be a better option? Some of the bridge cameras are excellent. It all depends on your goals when photographing.

It's the 25th already! I haven't even finished reading the book. I have taken at least 500 doll photographs, but haven't edited any yet. Not sure I will accomplish that before the end of the month. We might need two months per book! LOL
