I have to make a choose for the sigma lens promotion, I have the nikon d5100, 18-55 is a very basic lens, I want a walkaround lens, but this day I find a lot of people are using smartphone to shoot, I know it is not the best, but you can carry it all the time and shoot almost on any place.
on the other hand, d5100 has to use a bag to carry around, sigma 18-250 with macro zoom is not very big but it is still a lot bigger than smartphone. For approx $400, what would you want to do?
if it is camera smartphone, what is the good one on camera side?
any suggestion welcome.

Do I buy a car or go green and get a bike, only you can decide if you want a phone or a camera

I see loads of people using a phone, perhaps they can't afford a proper camera or don't want one

what kind of quality can I expect from Samsung camera?
this day I usually take 8m jpg size, if the event is important than I would use RAW. Well make my file management a bit faster and easier.

Galaxy Camera 16.3mp JPEG
Galaxy S4 13mp JPEG

If you want to shoot RAW in a compact camera you can get the Nikon Coolpix A (16.2mp RAW). Fixed 18.5mm lens. Or the Nikon Coopix P7700 (12.2mp RAW). 6-42.8mm zoom lens.

I believe that to be personal preference. I would get the lens. The lens will outlast the phone. It is true, however, that you will more than likely have your phone on you at all times. Tough decision!

Here is what I have: Nikon d7000 w/Nikkor 18-300mm f3.5-5.6 and a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. The Nikon is with me 95% of the time in a small backpack and the phone is in my pocket. In the last few months I have been getting used to bringing my dslr with me wherever I go. I am currently taking about 250+ pictures a week. I usually dump the cards in my camera every night. I use the phone for facebook, instagram & twitter.

A phone will not give you keeper photographs. These photos are for playing. For what purposes are you using your camera? Would a good point and shoot be a better option? Some of the bridge cameras are excellent. It all depends on your goals when photographing.

Would you use the smart phone as a phone, or just as a camera? Are you able to pay the monthly fees? If so, then it is a more useful, even a multi-useful device. With a two-year contract the iPhone or Galaxy is $200. With email, Facebook, Twitter, phone, and news, in addition to the camera, it is the sensible purchase.

I did a test drive on the lens yesterday, and it is very good compare to the 18-55 kit lens, it is night and day.
Well I order it already for C$399, I do think it will last me for some time.
Now the question is the kit lens is almost useless, once I put the sigma on it as a walk around lens.
Should I sell it, what kind of price I might expect? and where is the good place to sell it? I just don't want to keep it for nothing.
is this a good idea?
on the other hand, when the smartphone drop in price for those with the nice camera function like the nokia 925, I might think about it.
thanks for all the suggestion.

Get the lens, there is no such thing as a good camera/phone.

They are two different animals... maybe get both and an adapter to mount the lens on the phone.

Go for the lens. My preference was for a 18 - 200mm lens which gives the 35mm equivalent of 330mm on a Canon. Thus one lens gives me just over 11x zoom which I have found OK for me. The quality of pictures are much better than the 18 - 55mm 'basic' lens.

A neighbor who does professional photography has a 18 - 270mm lens as a general lens but that is quite a bit heavier.

Hard to tell with this magnification.
They have improved so much in the last few years.
(looks like someone drained the pond)
