I have a terabyte drive that has always been managed by “time machine “
If I get a new machine and connect the drive, do I need t manually put photos in photos and documents in documents or will the drive automatically populate its contents to the new machine. Or does it just act as an archive that I need to go to when I need something that I know to be to be on my old machine. Thanks for your reply.

I can do all I need to do now. I guess I was asking if I need to be concerned about being able to update security patches in the future if I can’t update OS systems. Apple website says I can update to Catalina 10.15.7 but that’s it. Just wanted opinion from the experience out there if I should update to Catalina or leave well enough alone and plan on a new machine in while I’m still working to carry me through most of my retirement?

To all who took the time to respond, I thank you all for the info. I have suffered most of my adult life at work in a PC windows world. For the past 10 years that I have had my iMac I have not had one problem, and except for the occasional restart message still no problems. I want to get a new machine while I am still working before I retire in April. I guess I’ll do the air with a larger monitor. Again thank you all. You were a great help.

I like the 27”. If I did switch to a laptop is there any way to use my existing 27” as a monitor only for the laptop? I seem to remember a post once where someone did that.

I have a late 2012 IMac that works just fine. Large drive and all stuffed up with ram when they were in store upgrade able.It runs Mojave and is at the point where it is not able to take any further iOS updates. I use it for archiving my photos and paying my bills. Other that that I am not doing anything fancy or complicated with it. Once in a while it comes out of sleep mode with the message that it “ re started due to a malfunction, report or ignore” Otherwise it works just fine. I am 66 years old and am planning on retiring in 7 months. My question is: while I’m still working, Should I buy a new machine now to hopefully be my last machine and at least be upgradable for years to come? Or: Keep what I have being that I have no problems with it. My fear is it will just quit someday. I have an external terabyte drive and would hope to just clone it to a new machine. What is the opinion of you Mac users out there who have experience with long life machines. I thank you all in advance for time you take to respond.

For photo processing I have a late 2012 27” iMac running Mojave. I never upgraded to Catalina. After looking on Apple support pages it looks as though Catalina is the last upgrade I will be able to do with this machine. I clicked on “upgrade now” just to get more details and Monterey pops up. Monterey is only compatible with 2015 machines and up. Questions: if I wanted to upgrade one last time, is Catalina still available or did I pass the window of opportunity? How do I download that rather than Monterey? And, for those of you using Catalina are you happy with it enough to recommend me doing the upgrade ? I have an iPhone 11 and Mac at home but occasionally I need to download just a few photos at work on a desktop PC using windows 10. When I plug in my phone the pc wants to download all the photos and then it becomes very difficult to locate just 4 or 5 photos in 12 separate folders that populate the screen. Question: Is there an easier way or an available app that makes transfer of photos easier from iPhone to PC. Also some photos are not even viewable because they say the format is not recognized or the file is corrupted, but the photo is fine on the phone. Thanks in advance for responding.

I have a Nikon D90 that I bought when they were introduced. Unfortunately I was not a member of UHH so I knew nothing of “grey market” I just searched the internet for lowest price and Bought a “kit” I found out later on from a UHH post on how to decipher the serial number that it is grey market. It is in perfect condition, works fine and probably doesn’t have 2000 clicks on it. If I was to sell it what would be a realistic asking price. Also if I wanted to keep my current lenses what would you suggest I get to replace it. I’m just a hobby photographer and I like to photograph old building, rust belt type things. And with this said would you suggest I just keep what I have at 65 years of age. I’m retiring soon and thought I might be able to spend more time making pictures. I thank in advance all who respond.

There is more Mac knowledge here than anywhere. Working from home using a VPN to a windows PC. Everything connects fine but if I don’t continually wiggle my mouse the connection logs off within 30 seconds and I have to sign in again. I could be on all day as long as I keep moving my mouse. Every adjustment for power save and sleep/ wake on both computers was looked at. The IT guy at my workplace has no idea and gave me some downloaded from the internet modifications to the Mac OS which seems kind of drastic. Has any UHHers seen or heard of the problem? Thought it would be relevant during the COVID work at home rage. Thank you for any help.

Does anyone know what process or software is used to make a photo slide show where there is a pan or slow zoom in or out or and then a fade to the next photo. I see it a lot in photo journalism type documentary stuff. Ken Burns also used it often in his civil war and Vietnam documentaries. A bunch of still photos get movement as they fade to the next. Also can narration or music be in the background and can this creation be saved to a DVD of flash drive to use in a presentation or is it only doable within the software?
