iPhone photo download to PC

All,
I have an iPhone 11 and Mac at home but occasionally I need to download just a few photos at work on a desktop PC using windows 10. When I plug in my phone the pc wants to download all the photos and then it becomes very difficult to locate just 4 or 5 photos in 12 separate folders that populate the screen. Question: Is there an easier way or an available app that makes transfer of photos easier from iPhone to PC. Also some photos are not even viewable because they say the format is not recognized or the file is corrupted, but the photo is fine on the phone. Thanks in advance for responding.

I've been looking at these two products below. I haven't tried them as of yet though.

I use iCloud for Windows. You can find photos through your albums. HEIC photos transfer as two files: jpg and video.

You have to send the photos to your iCloud. Not sure if that’s the default.

If you select the photo in Photos (on your iPhone), a number of options pop up. Those include sending the image by email or Airdrop. The option list is quite extensive. I believe some of those options result in producing JPG images for the action step.

Hi. I don’t have this issue when I do it. I don’t download automatically. After denying that prompt, my iphone pops up as a drive in windows explorer. Once I give it permissions, I can navigate to the folder with the pics, and then drag the ones I want to my folders memory. Works really well for the limited pics I need at work.

Could you email the photos to yourself and then use the PC's mail program to download them? I recently bought a cheap Windows laptop to run those programs that don't have an OSX port and would be difficult to run under Parallels on my iMac. This method works for me but I will follow this thread to find a better solution.

I think many people try to make this operation "too automatic" and thus too complicated by either trying to use some software or WIN 10 to do it for you. Do not use any programs or apps to do the download.

When an iPhone is plugged into the computer's USB port, WIN 10 treats it just like an external USB memory device, or external hard drive. Simply go to File Explorer and it should be listed under the PC under some name like APPLE or possibly your iPhone name. At this point, you can view, transfer, or copy any file on the iPhone to your PC.

Under that directory go to the DCIM directory and pick out the photos you want to copy, highlight them and paste them into the directory or file that you want them stored in on your PC. I like to use the copy/paste operation, it seems easiest for me. One other point, I set my iPhone to store only in jpg, rather than the Apple HEIC format. These usually are an issue since that format seems to be Apple only. WIN 10 and other editing programs often have a problem with them.

I use this exact same process to transfer photos from my camera's SD card. I may have other photos on the card I do not want to keep or have already transferred. I just choose the ones I want to transfer and move only those to the PC.

In these situations, it is MUCH easier to perform this operation manually than to allow WIN 10 or some software to perform the operation for you.

I set my iPhone to automatically convert my photos to JPEG's in Settings. On my PC, I use File Explorer to navigate to my iPhone device, open the DCIM folder, and then select whatever photos or all that I want to copy. I don’t use the Photos app that comes with Windows 10. I like using File Explorer.

When I plug my IPhone into my windows 10 computer, it asks where do I want to down load to, after I choose where to download to, if I want to download all of them, I simply select all, if I don't want to download all, I just select the ones I want to download. Easy peazy!

Email the photos you want only if you don't need raw. It will change them to jpeg I believe &, solve both problems.

I use iCloud for windows. Photos from iPhone automatically load to iCloud. From your pc, which you will need iCloud for windows, go photos and you will see all your pics. Select the ones you want and then you edit and save to destination of your choice.

On my iPhone there is a “recents” album which presents photos in the order they are uploaded. I don’t see that on iCloud for Windows so you have to do some searching unless you have them in an album.

“Format not recognized” happens when the iPhone saves HEIC files instead of standard JPEGs. Go to Settings >> Camera >> Formats and choose “Most Compatible.”
