I have used tripods for 50 years, monopods for 30 years. I have CF and metal monopods and find litle difference despite the CF being slightly lighter in weight. I found flip locks quicker and more reliable than twist locks. I bought a metal flip lock tripod (brand?) with easily releasing 3 feet which permit it to stand up on its own(only if desired), thinking I MIGHT use that capability and conciously tried to use the feet, but found no use for them since my hand was always on the camera. I use Arca-Swiss style plates/clamps for rigidity, quick attachment. I would be afraid that if I used the 'feet' someone, wind, or my poor monopod placement might knock over an inherently unstable mount, since the feet do not increase rigidity with me holding firmly to camera/monopod setup.

I have been using tripods for 50 years and at 90 still do. Sirui, Manfrotto, Gitzo, Benro and some others all make good tripods both in aluminum & carbon fiber, with twist and flip leg locks, and in different lengths. The camera on top of the tripod should have an Arca-Swiss style plate to instantly attatch it to a clamp which itself is integral to a "ball head". There are multiple online articles on tripods. My best advice is to visit a well-stocked camera store and determine how much weight (aluminum slightly heavier than CF)you can carry and if you prefer twist or flip (my choice)locks. There are tripod straps which permit carrying it over your shoulder. There are excellent savings in buying a used tripod (not much to break).

To my knowledge, United Airlines routinely DID NOT verifyBoeing inspections.

I have long known some of the Boeing Sea/Tac employees, some of whom are still working in a supervisory capacity. They have told me that due to diversity policy, some employees are retained who previously would have been dismissed due to poor perofrmance, including "quality control" check inspectors who certify positive inspections incompletely accomplished. Some defects are ultimately discovered by the aircraft purchaser (airline) but some, like the incompletelly attached emergency plug doors, are not. Boeing (according to my friends) must comply with Federal workforce guidelines, resulting in these failures. Boeing is now having some quality control inspections double checked, at increased cost to Boeing. No idea as to what will happen to the non-inspecting inspectors.

I have several tripods, aluminum & carbon fiber, all well researched prior to purchase> For travel: make sure the tripod you get can fit into your luggage. On one tripod, I remove the ball head to make the pod fit. Also, flip locks are more reliable than the twist locks, because if the plastic internal rings inside the twist locks have problems, the tripod becomes useless until you get home; the flip locks can be tightened(or loosened) with the allen or twist wrench supplied wtih the pod. Aluminum weighs about 25-30% more than CF, but only dents if impacted, but CF can fracture if impacted heavily .CF vibrates less, is slightly stiffer but not a big thing with lenses for travel (important with big, heavy 400mm+ lenses. Zipper carry case for tripod w/ball head mounted is very useful. I have a Mefoto CF globe trotter, very good. No Ulanzi experience. I also take a monopod w/quick Arca Swiss quick release, very useful and fast when on tour with non-photograpy group. Good luck!

The environmental crazies do not recognize or consider the substantial risk of large lithium rechargeable batteries, demonstrated by the recent lithium battery fire on the new cars being shipped from Europe to the USA : ship and automobiles all lost. The fire last night at the lithium battery charging facility in one of the former Russian countries is more evidence. We should never risk our children to satisfy their nonsensical programs.

Your Oakhurst base is about 40+minutes from Yosemite Valley, so you may be starting very early , ending late in the day to get the iconic images possible. When I lived in California, I was a frequent Yosemite visitor, found a tripod invaluable. You may see deer; I never saw bear. Circular polarizer often puts deeper color in images. My most useful lens was my Nikon 24-120VR zoom @ f 11. Lens selection depends on where your bus deposits you, and how many lenses+ tripod you can carry. It will soon be fall in Yosemite Valley , and already is fall in the high Sierra with Aspen becoming golden. There are Aspen groves near Tuolomne meadows and Tenaya Lake .

As a former California resident and very frequent visitor I strongly urge tripod use, which Ansel Adams used for most of his iconic images. As to lenses, I think the 24-105 stopped down f8 or f11 with a circular polarizer when appropriate will work well for most images. Some of the higher located climbing sites and peaks as well as less accessible areas along the Merced river might be better shown with longer lenses. The many birds, marmots, ground squirrels ( if not close) will need long lenses(& tripod).

In addition to turning off IS when on tripod, release shutter remotely with wired or wireless shutter release or self-timer shutter release. You won't need ND filter if you have a low ISO and a smaller aperture .
