I am shooting some long exposure waterfalls this week and wondering whether I should turn off IS on my canon RF lens (using r6). Thanks.

On a tripod most say turn it off.
Bring neutral density filters

All shots taken using a tripod the IS should be turned off. Also if a camera body has the IS or VR instead or in addition that should be turned off when using a tripod as well. Some camera detect the Tripod and automatically turn off the IS / VR. I do not know how that works. Good luck with your project.

Come on. This is 21st century, market-leading EOS technology. It's been well over a decade of market leadership from Canon in the area of Image Stabilization. This leading Canon IS technology includes the 'smarts' to sense a stable tripod platform and not cause any problem. You're more likely to forget to turn IS back on than it will impact your long-exposure images. Passing around outdated suggestions and non-Canon best practices is what makes the internet such a cesspool.

I am no expert here, but I think the answer is "it depends". In ancient times the recommendation was "yes, turn it off". But with many newer cameras its my understanding is its not necessary.

Market leading technology??????
Now you Canon guys are as bad as the Nikon guys. Believe it or not, the world of cameras existed before MILCs.
The used Pentax K-30 I purchased in 2015 had IBIS - exactly when did Canon ‘discover’ IBIS??

1995. Canon popularized autofocus with their EOS system in 1987 and displaced Nikon as the leading camera used by professional photographers and photojournalists. And in 1995 Canon introduced the world’s first lens using image stabilization technology. How’s that for market leading technology? So easy to check facts.

There are various kinds of IS. Canon's first lens with lens-based ("optical") Image Stabilization was introduced in 1995.

But it wasn’t IBIS - and the extra ‘tricks’ like PS that IBIS permits - the MILC are now turning to.

In addition to turning off IS when on tripod, release shutter remotely with wired or wireless shutter release or self-timer shutter release. You won't need ND filter if you have a low ISO and a smaller aperture .

So check your facts. Minolta introduced AF in 1985. Honeywell had developed the process in the 70's.

Check your reading, the comment was about IBIS, not ILIS.
