I would not want to use a tripod for something like this. Too much chance for it to be toppled by passerbys, and for most attendees, it's just plain inconsiderate.

There are 36 acres there and I was one of six people on the property on both days. Using a tripod was definitely not a problem in any area of the property !!! Seldom was anyone else withing 100 feet of me unless we got together to chat about one of the 4000 vintage cars. Using a tripod is a must for me in taking multiple shot HDR images !!

Thank you to all who contributed their advice and ideas to my trip to Old Car City !! I had a great time and came back with too many photos. (Is there ever too many - NO !!). I flew down on a Thursday morning and arrived at OCC about 2:00pm and shot until closing at 4:00. Checked into my hotel just down the road and went to supper at Applebees. Next morning (Friday) I was there at 10:00 and shot until 4:00 again. Saturday It was raining very hard and I decided not to shoot in the rain as it was really coming down and I had a later flight home ahead of me. I visited the Southern Civil War Museum in Kennesaw and shot pictures of the locomotive "General" from the "Great Locomotive Chase" there. I wanted to get the waterwheel at Berry College, but it just raining too hard.

It was a fun trip and I plan to go back again later next year. You can view some of my images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/garycarlson/ ...Once again thanks to my UHH friend who offered advice !!

I am headed to OCC at the end of the month. I'm taking two Nikon Bodies, a d500 and a d850.

I thinking my d850 with 17-35 f/2.8 on a tripod (Is that too close ? Bring a 24-70 ?) and then maybe a Macro on the d500. Which macro ?? 60 - 85 -105 ?? How close are you getting to these cars ?? What did you use when you were there ??

Thanks in advance for your advice, Gary

I am excited !! I just booked my flights to come and shoot at OCC November 22-23rd. I cannot wait to get there. I have been wanting to make the trip down from Rhode Island for a couple years now. Finally going down. This will be a quick trip down and back. Just enough to wet my whistle and get me planning for the next and longer venture to OCC !! Thank you all for your advise !!

Anybody know who will do a custom size canvas wrap for panoramas photos. Something like 12 x 45" ?? I have checked Nations and Bay Photo and a couple of the usual ones and they all have cookie cutter sizes.

I am heading out at daybreak in the morning to shoot some River Otters as they come up onto the ice with small fish. I'll see how DX mode (5568 x 3712) works out. Look for pics......

The little buggers didn't co-operate this morning, but I did get to set up and compare the two "image Area" selections and they are identical in image quality when viewed at the same size side by side.

I don't expect anybody to do anything. It was just a suggestion in case there were conflicting answers.

Sorry to waste your time....But it was your choice to take the time to post your sarcastic childish answer. It is just these types of posts that keep "less experienced" readers from posting their questions.

The weather did break today and on a rare day off I did get out to set up and compare the two "Image Area" selections. The majority of posters who said that the two are identical were absolutely correct and I thank them for their guidance and wisdom. For those who took the time to lead me in the right direction...Thank You !!

You have a great setup for wildlife and birding photography. I think you have your answer on crop modes. Have you looked at back button focus yet? Steve Perry has some great material on the topic.

Yes, I have both my d7100 and my d500 set up for back button focus. Once you have used it for a while it becomes second nature. I don't even think about focusing anymore. It is a must for any bird photography.

The only time it becomes a problem is when you hand your camera to someone and ask them to get a shot of you...............

I have searched here for some information and previous posts do not entirely satisfactorily answer my question (S).

I am beginning to shoot primarily wildlife with a crop frame Nikon d500 and a 400mm f/2.8 lens. In the camera shooting settings I can choose DX mode (5568 x 3712) or 1.3 crop (4272 x 2848). I believe that if I use the 1.3 crop selection, all the camera does is crop away the perimeter of the larger image leaving me with a smaller 4272 x 2848 sized image. Is this true ?? If I cropped the image to 4272 x 2848 in post processing do I have the same quality as if I cropped it by designating 1.3 crop in camera ?? What's the difference if any ?

A quote from a non Nikon after market manual on the d500 says "Sports and Wildlife photographers often find this option which produces 12.2 MP image a very useful to give their images EXTRA reach". Of course i want the best image quality, but at which "Image area" setting ??

Try this: Take the converter off the lens. Turn the aperture ring to the higher numerical number (F22 ??) and reinstall the converter on the lens. Then put the converter/lens assembled onto your body. Re-post if it worked..............

I have a DEll XPS desktop that I use exclusively for post processing. I haven't had a hic cup !! I do email and financial tasks on another machine. If you want dual monitors (now or later) be sure you get a video card with two monitor outputs or you will be shelling out later for a NVIDA card. Get as much RAM and storage (especially RAM) as your pocketbook will stand.

I bought mine at B&H. Check them out !!

His lens is 7.6 " long and add to that the thickness of his camera and I don't think it is going to fit well crosswise in a "Sling back" pack. If he ever wants to keep an extender between lens and body it will definately a NO GO !!
