I have been "lurking" on UHH for several years now. Some of you seem like old friends to me. I enjoy the insight and practical advice given here, and the "pile-ons" when somebody screws up.
I have screwed-up!
I have a pristine 500mm f4 Nikkor ais p lens I bought from a friend and I purchased a converted TC-16a teleconverter from Ebay. The converter turns the lens into an 800mm lens with limited auto focus ability. I tried it in that manner and got an "ee"merrorm message in the viewfinder of my Nikon810.
After extensive research, I found a web posting that gave me the instructions for turning off a setting in the camera menu that would enable the lens to do what I intended it to do. It would operate in the manual settings AND snap the lens into sharp focus once I keyed in on a subject. Life was good.
I wrote those settings down, put the lens away, and went on about my life. It got cold here, with heavy snow, so I stayed inside for a month and forgot about bird photography for awhile.
Yesterday it got warm, and the sun came out. I felt ambitious and got out the Old Girl, put on the teleconverter, and headed for the lake.
Couldn't find the paper--couldn't find the web post (forgot to write THAT down) and had no idea what kind of settings to use without my cheat sheet.
Did I mention I am over 70?
I think the setting was in the focus settings menu but I'm not sure. I know it was very simple, very quick, and made everything work.
It got rid of the "ee" error message and the thing worked perfectly.
Does anyone out there know how to do this?
I'm not sure, I think you have to have either the highest or lowest "f" stop set. It would also help if you list the lens setup in the "non cpu" menu.

According to the Nikon Compendium, the only Nikon Teleconverters compatible with the 500 f/4.0 Nikkor P are the TC-14B and TC-301.
Edit: That’s and old list, though, so you might check your manual under “Compatible Lenses.”
Set your camera in Aperture and open it wide. Had to do that with Rokinon lenses also, which is why I don't have any them any more.
Thanks for the current replies, but I have done all these things. I had the lens and tc16 combination working by turning off the "ee" warning in the camera's menu, but I lost the paper that tells me how to do that and I don't remember the site that I got that information from. It was a simple task, but I stupidly did not put the paper where Icould find it.
The TC16a only works on older Nikon P lenses, of which there are only three. it couples to the 500mm f4 p and allows autofocus as well as making the lens an 800mm behemoth, and it really works. I had it working that way just by making one menu setting I think in the focus section of my D810, but I can't remember how I did it.
Try this: Take the converter off the lens. Turn the aperture ring to the higher numerical number (F22 ??) and reinstall the converter on the lens. Then put the converter/lens assembled onto your body. Re-post if it worked..............
That didn't work either--the camera autofocus is working, I can hear it moving, but I can't get rid of that pesky "ee" warning which would enable me to operate the lens and teleconverter combination. There must be a way to turn it off, because I did it before. Wish I could find the darn website I went to that outlines the simple steps. Thank you for your suggestion.
