I like to photograph birds in flight. Because they are in the forground of a bright sky, the automatic exposure, without compensation mostly gets it wrong. Even spot exposure mostly fails because they haven't yet incorporated subject tracking into spot exposure. I need to use exposure compensation to get the bird properly exposed.

My Canon R5 does have fairly good focus tracking and eye tracking. I wish the spot exposure could be coupled to the focus point but it isn't. Perhaps it will be in a future firmware upgrade or the new upcoming version of the R5.

This is why I have the rear wheel set as the exposure compensation adjustment on all of my Olympus bodies. It makes quickly tuning the exposure a snap.

Thanks Ed! I'll note it in my calendar to check with you.

I shoot mostly in Aperture Priority with a set ISO. The rear dial is used for + or - to compensate for what the meter sets vs. what I want to manage (preventing blown highlights, pulling up the shadows etc.). My mirrorless cameras show how much over/under exposure I've set in the EVF and the scene is either darker or lighter than I expect in the EVF or LCD.

I'd suggest a Samsung 980 Pro M.2 for your OS and other programs and an at least 1TB SSD for data.
I've just done a pile of upgrades on my 4 year old i7 Win 10 PC and the M.2 really helped - plus the additional 16GB RAM I installed last night improved the old girl from 'pretty quick' by going to the M.2 to 'really snappy' with a total of 32GB RAM.

I'm planning on an escorted wildlife photo tour to Costa Rica next year. It will be one of the largest indulgences to which I've ever treated myself. We haven't decided on a tour company yet but will be checking several of them out.

Ron, let us know what your choice ended up being (after your trip - you'll probably second guess yourself several times before you actually leave!).

Later this month I get a chance to take the VIA ‘Canadian’ from Toronto Ontario to Vancouver British Columbia.

While the train does not stop for long at any particular place it does have those ‘dome’ cars allowing you to capture some of the scenery as you travel across the country. I will spend time in Vancouver and then on Vancouver island in Victoria.

I could really appreciate some advice on the lenses I should take with me. One lens people suggest is the 12-200 but I do not own that lens. I would consider buying it but stock is such that it would arrive too late for my trip.

Thanks,
Ron

I have all of the same lenses you do. It depends on how much you want to haul around (and worry about) and what the trip is for. If it's a photography-centric trip, fill your boots. If it's a vacation for you and your wife, take as little camera equipment as possible. I'd take the OM-1, 12-100mm f4, 8mm f1.8 and perhaps a 17mm f1.8. The last 2 lenses are fast aperture, the 8mm can be defished to very wide angle rectilinear views, the 17mm f1.8 is tiny and unobtrusive plus you can shoot HHHR with the 12-100mm and get really excellent results. My 2 cents worth.

When I was shooting professionally I carried 2 (or 3) camera bodies, a spare flash and extra batteries for everything.
Lots of film too.

It took 62 days from the day I paid my deposit in January 2022 for my 150-400 to come in and a few weeks to get the OM-1 after I ordered it in June, including the 2nd battery.

I still have the 300mm f4.0. It's an excellent lens but hasn't had any use since getting the 150-400.

My guess is that the E-M1X was a testbed for higher prices, camera body size acceptance among Olympus users and new analytics for future use. It also let them use up their existing stock of older generation chipsets, EVFs and batteries.
I balked at the higher price and body size, especially with the EVF lacking the better resolution many of us wanted. I've got over the sticker shock with cameras coming onto the market now. I bought an OM-1 and a 150-400mm f4.5 in the past year.
