I deal with these things all the time at work. They LOVE human habitat and homes become entrenched. This spider eats dead stuff so the venom has to dissolve stale dead tissue when they feed. Almost impossible to get rid of without tenting and fumigating.

They live six months with no food or water. Most of their diet is dead already. If you live with these the best thing to do is eliminate bed skirts since the bed is the number one location to be bitten. Glueboards are great tools to catch and kill them as they run around

When the NFL left St. Louis and trashed our city on the way out, I swore not to watch another game. I have to admit that having all this extra time has improved my life!

This is an extremely difficult spider to get rid of since it becomes entrenched in virtually all areas of structures. It lives for 6 months with no food or water. Although shy, it is a hunting spider and that makes it easier for humans living within an infested structure to recieve a bite. As hunting spiders go, it is a wimp and it's main food source is dead insects. During the warm Midwest months, we regularly tent homes to kill all the spiders and their eggs.

Since I shoot insects, I like the extra separation the Sigma 150 provides

The main consideration for me is working distance. Since I photograph insects it is important not to spook the target with my lens. All are sharp but the 150 Sig keeps more distance

If you are acquiring a macro lens for insect photography, how close you have to get to them makes a huge difference. A Sigma 150 allows for greater distance and you get more shots without spooking your target. Also tack sharp.

Great shot! Reflective insects have always been difficult for me to focus on and tiger beetles rarely stand still making it doubly difficult

When searching for a macro lens my biggest issue became working distance. Since I was shooting insects I wanted a decent working distance a bought a used Sigma 150mm. for about $600. Does a great job and I think I am able to get shots I would otherwise miss due to distance.

There are MANY really good macro lenses out there. I wanted to shoot insects so a major consideration for me was how close do I need to get to achieve a 1 to 1 macro ratio. I chose the sigma 150 so I don't have to get so close I spook the subject.

Thanks to all of you for your nice comments! This snake did live and I was able to go back a few hours later and let my wife see him in the same spot. They are incredibly patient. He let me sneak in close with my macro rig to capture the close ups but my fingers were always out of range. Adrenaline rush for sure!

I found this guy in Alabama recently and was fortunate enough to get very close with my macro lens. Very small snake that packs a wallop! This is a dusky pygmy rattlesnake and it was curled up waiting to strike at whatever came by. Interesting how it burrowed down into the sand to lower it's already low profile.

That is a beautiful animal. Good find. Nicely shot. Hard to shoot with such a busy pattern. EXIF data says 150mm focal length, no flash. What lens/lighting were you using?

Thank you! I was shooting a D600 with my Sigma 150mm macro and an sb600 flash unit with an Apollo micro flash modifier. He behaved quite nicely and I got my lens within 6 inches. I think he was waiting to ambush a lizard and tolerated me. I have done macro photos of insects larger than his head
