Went out to macro insects while on vacation, but wound up shooting macros or near macros of a pigmy rattlesnake that had buried itself in the sand waiting for prey. I love Gulf Shores, Alabama

That is a beautiful animal. Good find. Nicely shot. Hard to shoot with such a busy pattern. EXIF data says 150mm focal length, no flash. What lens/lighting were you using?

Thank you! I was shooting a D600 with my Sigma 150mm macro and an sb600 flash unit with an Apollo micro flash modifier. He behaved quite nicely and I got my lens within 6 inches. I think he was waiting to ambush a lizard and tolerated me. I have done macro photos of insects larger than his head

Super shots, Bob, of one of our 6 poisonous snakes in the state!

Wow! You really must download to separate him from the sand. Nice shooting!

So many thoughts going through my head right now:
You did this ON PURPOSE?
About Gulf Shores and how I USED to like it there.
Wondering why I feel so brave when I shoot garter snakes or rat snakes.
. . . . . . .

Bob, excellent photos of a small snake that has a bad attitude. All the pigmies I ran across in Florida always wanted to show how big and mean it is. Striking at anything that got close. Love the photos you shared.
