if you save $3 a week you can buy the nifty fifty in about a year and still have the 35 you already bought. and I think at least in the case of cannon you will find if you research it that it is actually sharper than the 1.8 50mm which is way more expensive. just my 2 cents hope this helps

have you looked at the 800 5.6 on the canon 1 series cameras with the 1.4 it will still auto focuse. for birding you will never go to big. but it is HEAVY.

Sorry for your friend's loss, BigD. When I was contracting, I could not easily replace thousands of dollars worth of electric and pneumatic tools I always had in my van. I used a 2 X 2 X 4 foot steel job box that could be bolted down and damn near impossible to break into. Do a Google search for "job box" or "jobsite box". They come in much smaller sizes and can be found for $100 - $200, less than the cost to custom fabricate.

this was going to be my recommendation as well.

I have the 400 5.6 and it is probably the best in flight lens. I have also used the 800 5.6 but it is hard to hand hold. To freeze motion without flash I would recommend shutter 1600 and I try to keep the ISO below 1000 so you have the option to crop. best of luck.

if we spent 30 minutes on every photo instead of 30 minutes on photo shopping every photo. think of the shots you would get after 6 months or a year. just think we have to a large degree developed the tendency to take lots of shots and hope we can find one good enough to photoshop a good shot from.

Now if I can only get that bird to stop dead in flight . . . or that duck could only stop swimming away . . .

I have adjusted exposure of a eagle "in flight" because the dynamic range of the camera will not allow the adult eagle to be as bright as the young ones that do not have the white feathers. the flight path gives me less than 3 seconds so like i said get to know your camera
