Thank you for the excellent info. Did you feel safe flying within Africa? How about driving? How would you rate the camps? Ritz Carlton or motel 6 or somewhere in between?

I have flown on single engine 4 seaters where they had to buzz the landing strip to get the animals off.
The African link which is the commuter out of Joberg is very good and they go out of their way to help with your oversize camera bag. As far as accommodation it can go from camping to luxury rooms depends on what you are willing to pay. We do the bungalow which are rustic but comfortable

I agree 100%. The flight is for the birds. 24 hours without sleep. I should have upgraded to economy plus.

If you are flying from the west coast I would look at Emirates or Quatar

My wife Sarah and I think it's time we set out on an yet another adventuresome road trip.(early April). This time to the scenic south west. We've pretty much narrowed it to the Monument Valley area and a night or two stay at The View Hotel. Just wondered if any of you guys know of any "hidden gems" off the beaten path in that area worth having a look see?

I lived in Conifer, Co for 12 years. Did the Pom Pom camp in the Okavango. I use a Nikon d850. In March my wife and I will be spending 4 weeks in Kruger. I do a self guided tour. This will be my fourth in three years. I have enjoyed your pictures

I have been watching this go back and forth. Selecting a camera and gear is a very personal issue. The level of skill involved is critical to the outcome my advise is to rent the lens and compare the results with your 200-500 and then you can make a very good decision. Remember it is your money and what ever decision you make you have to live with. As I said before rent the lens compare the results. That is what I do

Thanks for the information.......

I also have the Tamron 100-400 [ which I have sent back to Tamron twice for calibration ] and I have the Nikon 200-500 .......I just can't get the "tack sharp" photos with the 200-500.....my wife says I am too "picky!"...

So I have been looking at the 500....do you have any photos you could share with me .......I would ove to see them..

Thanks

I have the 200-500mm f/5.6 and get good results with it, but everything I see and hear says I should sell it and buy the 500mm f/5.6 PF.

It depends on what you photograph. I go on safari in Southern Africa and have used Nikon 600 mm, Nikon 300 mm and Nikon 200-500, the prime lens where very excellent but limited on the picture framing. One time I had the eyeball of an elephant the next time the head of an impala. I found that the 200-500 worked the best. Just my experience.

Your source?

The only good source is EDGAR but I have no intention of looking it up because I am only interested in buying the products which I like not buying stock in the company. By the way last I looked both Nikon and Canon stock is down

Greetings! As a landscape and product photographer who went back to Nikon last year, from the Fujifilm X-System, I'm sure hoping that these rumors are just that...rumors. From what I've read since moving to the Z-System, Nikon hopes that the Z System will greatly help move that bottom line into positive territory, and judging by the apparent popularity of the Z bodies, especially the lower end models, I am encouraged, not to mention the stellar reviews of their new Nikkor S lenses, both the f/2.8 models as well as the 24-70 f/4 "kit" zoom! Indeed, the 50 f/1.8 Nikkor S is the sharpest lens I've used in 45 years of photography. Good luck, Nikon!
Greetings! As a landscape and product photographer... (show quote)

Need not worry Nikon is not going anywhere. If they are struggling someone will acquire them. Your only concern is the camera you bought satisfy your needs

Why is Nikon financial trouble is of our concern? How many of us are working for Nikon and are worry about being layoff?

You are quite right. Evaluating companies financially is done if you are going to invest in them not if you are buying a product.

Well...almost a billion in losses in 2 years...that's not a write-off...lol.
I understand not wanting it to be true... I do. But Nikon is in real trouble.
They have cut R&D. They are cutting everywhere, but not just recently...they have been cutting for two years trying to stop the bleeding. It hasn't worked.
Canon is going to post a profit of over 600 million in contrast.

I am a little confused, I thought this was a photo blog where we can learn from each other on photography. But here we are evaluating the financial performance of a company. When I am evaluating investments I go to morningstar and EDGAR not UHH

Actually almost all dwelling ruins do have charcoal on the roofs or the overhangs- you need to look for it. Most of those that don't were actually storage for grains.

In that area very little decays. You can find small corn cobs still with kernels of corn. One of my friends find a sandal made of grass that was very old. It is still there hidden
