Have you tried GIMP? It's free and does a lot of the basics. I don't use it much, so I can't tell you what training is available at sites such as YouTube. Might be worth investigating if you have not already. Good luck!

I use a Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ for the very reasons mentioned by Sirvive. The center post is reversible. It can also be configured at various angles that are horizontal. The carbon fiber version is quite light and not terribly expensive.

I use Google photos for extended family pics. I post my best 'prosumer' photos on Flikr and share them with family and friends. And the best of each meet-up outing are posted on the meet-up website.

If you keep this up, we'll all have to learn the language of star photography. Sounds equipment intense good for the GAS issue most of us have. LOL. Nice image and thanks for the descriptions.

I had to look up the GAS acronym; there were 58 possibilities, but I narrowed it down to gear [or gadget] acquisition syndrome. What I'm learning at UHH is amazing!

I saw the earlier post as well and did the same research you have. My interpretation may be simplistic, but 'thumb' refers to the form factor and 'flash' the technology.

Linda, your photo is a beautiful representative of one of my guiding lights: look for the intricacies that build a scene. Of course, great or unusual light, motion and/or detail make it all the more special.
Here is one of my early favorites taken in a national park in VA during my first outing with a meet-up group. Its scope is a small 'back-water' scene in a stream with lots of activity in late autumn.

A quick 'howdy' to everyone to say thanks for the constant flow of information, ideas & opinions. Now that the kids are out of the house and I have retired, I can spend more time with my camera and post-edit software. Before the lockdown, I enjoyed outings with local Meet-Up groups and, earlier this year, spent 6 weeks in the FL panhandle exploring the many state & national parks, wildlife reserves and historic sites. As soon as it's safe, I'm hoping to head toward Albuquerque and the many places between here & there.
Cheers!
