Google has never let me down (well, once....). Apple has some fancy features (like aiming at a building and seeing the whole street while walking) but the features are rarely necessary. The trouble with WAZE is that as soon as it gives new directions, everyone uses them and you have a new traffic jam. Also, towns are getting "wise to WAZE" and crating one way streets to combat traffic.
Never liked Google corporately, but sometimes the 500 pound gorilla is your friend.

I'm doing a presentation for junior high children on Composition, and want to start with the question, " what the difference between a picture vs a photograph?" My answer is a picture is a memory you take for memories sake, a photograph is a memory you take after planning it out and carefully choosing how, when , why , where and who.
I know you hogs probably can give me a better description and that sometimes a picture becomes a lucky photograph. Any positive help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
I'm doing a presentation for junior high children ... (show quote)

To me a picture is simply a recording of what the lens sees, not necessarily with any thoughts, emotions, context, etc. Not unlike advanced dementia. A photograph “happens” when you apply your brain to interpret what you see.

I've used a ZS 60 and ZS 100 when I travel. Leave heavier gear at home. ZX 70 not too different and has a telescopic lens similar to the ZX 60 that has done an amazing job. These are all under $400 I believe.

When I used film I had to plan ahead. I was limited in money and couldn’t waste shots. No pictures of my dinner. No pictures taken "just because I could". I had to plan ahead and work at it. Film was a limited resource. Digital tends to make me lazy about planning ahead. Your thoughts.

Drives my wife nuts, but I still take limited pictures. Don't want to look back at a bunch of stuff I can't remember why I took.

I enjoy digital more because when I feel like it I can "practice" with multiple different sets of exposures of the same scene, etc. with no guilt about wasting film. I still come home from vacations with far fewer shots than my friends, but I'm happy with what I've got and not overwhelmed (of course, there is a delete button on my computer.....)

Didn't have a fixed amount in mind, but the price of the one you suggested is doable. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have a similar Lumix that I take when I travel. This is lots of camera for a great price and I don't need to carry lots of gear. My 10 yo grandson has mastered this camera nicely. A good choice. Good luck.

I agree that 9-10 yo does not need an iPhone, which is much more expensive anyway.

I'll keep what I have.

Bought Luminar last year. Getting nickled and dimes to death with add-ons. I quit.

From time to time people report that they dropped their cameras, causing damage to the camera or lens. Don't they use neck or wrist straps? Failing to use neck or wrist straps seems to me to be like riding in a car without wearing a seatbelt. What am I missing here?

I dropped mine despite it being around my neck. Had mosquito netting around my head (Ayers Rock notorious for tiny flying bugs of some kind. Got this tangled with my camera strap and in taking it off I pulled them both over my head, dropping the camera.

I have a zs 100 and a zs 70. I got the 70 for travel and its excellent telephoto lens (700 mm or so) with no weight. Eventually bought the zs 100 for its larger image sensor, though I'm not sure it was worth the difference. Either way, an excellent camera for travel unless photography is the main reason to travel.

I am rethinking taking my D850 and 3 lenses or the D500 and 18 to 300 to Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia for a 4 week vacation. The weight and bringing attention to me due to the expensive cameras and the suggestion my wife made about traveling light is making think about getting a different camera.

Is there a camera with built in lens that you would recommend?
Thanks

I spent a month in Australia/NZ with a lumix ZS 60th had wonderful pictures. This had an equivalent 700 (approx).mm zoom and I. The limited time there was on a tour I could easily catch some distant animal, etc. without having any special setup. If you are going on your own on a photo shoot, different story. I’ve since bought a ZS 100 for the bigger sensor, but frankly my photography is not so wonderful that it’s a critical difference. Anyway, with a small but versatile camera I got great vacation shots of excellent quality. I’m sure there are newer and more versatile models and certainly other makes, but a small bridge camera is the way to go. Please be careful going to Croatia now. Not sure where Covid stands, it it’s awfully close to the war zone.

I've had the same problem. Multiple programs and no expertise in any. My daughter, who is a very serious amateur, uses PS/LR. It's much more than I need as a much less intensive hobbyist.
I had been trying to keep up with Luminar but it never seems like a finished product and does not live ups to its promises in my opinion.

So... I just bought a copy of PS Elements 2022 (on sale for $69 dollars for a few more days) and haver resolved to learn it cold and forget the others. The price is right, no monthly fees, and it does much more than I will ever need. It has a tutorial, but there are also a huge number of You Tube instructional videos.

Good luck!
