Drove to Farmington Bay Bird Refuge Tuesday. The weather forecast showed stormy/snowy weather for the next week. So, I thought this might be my best chance at birds for a while.
Not many birds to photograph, but I managed a few. Way more fun than sitting at home.
Most are heavily cropped photos using Nikon Z9 and 500mm pf telephoto lens.
Enjoy,
Steve

Have you ever spent all day trying to find good stuff to shoot only to find that when you got back to your hotel room the view out of the window gave you one of the better shots of the day? Here are two of mine, both from the west coast of Scotland.
Feel free to post your own.
.
We also stayed in the hotel at Many Glaciers in Glacier National Park. Here is a photo from our second floor room the first evening we were there.
Enjoy,

Joe,
Thanks for your comments as always. I really like your fact about a pelican’s beak. Can’t wait to tell that fact to my grandkids!

After a lot of fence sitting...took the plunge and ordered the Nikon D850. At 72 this will probably be my last camera purchase. My D810 is very loved so hoping the D850 will be also. If anyone has tips to share, that would be appreciated. Thanks!
Wow, a D850 and Alaska. Can't beat that combination!
I worked and lived in Alaska for 20 years all prior to getting into digital photography. The sights I missed photographing were and are spectacular. I am jealous.
I have had my D850 since they came out. I have over 90,000 clicks of family, wildlife, scenery, Africa, Costa Rica and many National Park, snowflakes, hummingbirds, etc.
Make sure you get some good glass to shoot through. Primes and the trinity of zooms are needed to use the potential of this great DSLR.
Have a wonderful experience.

Great action shots Steve. My grandaughters are just starting lacrosse. Their mom played for UC Davis and was most valuable defensive player in the western states in 1994.
Thanks for your comments. What a great family tradition to play women's lacrosse. I can't imagine how proud you would be with a daughter that was so good at defense. So far, my granddaughters have played varsity high school and they are defensive players also.

Last night I photographed one of my granddaughter's Lacrosse matches. This is a Fall 7 on 7 league which is action packed. The field lighting is terrible. I like it much better in the Spring when they play their regular league matches on the High School football field. Most games are in the daylight and if they do have a night game it is very well lit.
The first photo was taken during the day last spring and shot using a Nikon D5 with 500mm pf lens, 1/1600 sec, ISO 320, F5.6. Not a lot of post processing, mainly cropping.
The second photo was taken last night with a Nikon Z9 and 70-200mm S lens, 1/1000 sec, ISO 25,600, F2.8. Post processing included Lightroom Classic and Topaz Photo AI. I have always had to slow the shutter down to shoot in these conditions which presents a set of problems that are almost impossible to correct.
I also included a third photo which is unedited from last night and is one frame before the second photo. Isn't it amazing what can be done to capture these moments in history, in poor conditions, and have them still presentable.

I really like your first photo. Balloon photos are cool but, the first is very creative and should be wall hanger in a business.

Beautiful set, Steve! No major migration yet?
Thanks for commenting. Not a migration that I noticed, it was real quiet except for seagulls and those little dark waterfowl that seem to populate the area.
I was quite impressed to see GBH sitting on the Eagles old dead tree branches.

Traveled to Farmington Bay Bird Refuge today. I wanted to find a place to sit and take photos of birds in flight to play around with my new Nikon Z9 camera. Not too many in flight and not in one spot. Although I did get a Harrier Hawk fly by as I sat in my Jeep. Beautiful day for a drive not so much for birding.
It was nice to get out in some beautiful weather.
Enjoy,
Steve
Mike,
These photos are great, really showing the beauty of the Wasatch Range. If she starts taking photos of ducks and flowers, you are in trouble.
I think you should leave the bag in the photo. It tells a story and gives the picture scale and class.
