I agreed to speak on Lightroom (LR) to my photography club in February. Of course LR is so chalk-full of features that I could easily over-whelm my audience with an exhausting list. I though I would focus on the most useful workflow enhancements. Specifically: those lesser known, but useful, shortcut keys and features that you wish you knew about earlier.

So I'm asking UHH subscribers , what useful LR shortcut keys/features do you wish someone had told you about earlier?

I start with Profile in the Basic panel.

You failed to read the whole article I guess from your response.

Actually I did read the whole article and the author’s conclusions for rest of world seem th be based on a statement by “one American retailer”, hardly a significant data point. He may be correct but he didn’t have a significant fact base for a meaningful conclusion.

I learned the same way, do lens corrections first, then everything else. And now with the latest Lightroom update, you can move tools around in the develop module. Lens corrections is right underneath the Basic panel which makes it more accessible.

Can you set it up to be done automatically on import?

I just did an informal test of holding a EOS 5DIII and 24-105L in one hand and an a7II with FD 50 prime it the other. They weigh the same although the Sony is more compact. If the goal is lighter by weight, use the Tech Specs of B&H and add up the grams of your current body & lens with the candidate Sony models. Don't just test of an absolute difference, but also a percentage where I think you'll find full frame bodies and lenses are not a big difference.

I did the comparison when I bought my D850. You might save a few ounces on the body but like lenses weigh the same and in many cases are more expensive.

From jaymatt again:

I did just purchase a new Sony, and LR 5.7 doesn’t recognize its lenses, so that’s one reason for the perhaps upgrade. I also use Luminar 19 and the newest ON1 as plug-ins. Might I just use one of them for lens correction, haze, etc. and forget the LR upgrade?

Don’t cut your nose off to spite your face. LR Classic CC with photoshop costs $10/month or two lattes. It is constantly improving and expanding its capabilities.

Free shipping is great when you can get it, but if your going to shop on the internet it would be best to realize that someone has to pay the shipping costs. They either hide it in the cost of the product you purchase, or you pay a fee for it. I hardly think $11.25 to ship something you deemed worth the price as out of line. Would the total package have been cheaper elsewhere? Did the $11.25 really screw the whole deal for you?

I use B&H and seem to always get free shipping.

...I'm not too sure about that. An Fx lens on a Dx camera body should give you 1.5 crop of the camera body x focal length of the lens.

What is the effect? Same as an increase in focal length!

There is a lot of free stuff out there but these videos are well organized with printable outlines. You get what you pay for. The Lightroom System $149 and because you get outlines the videos become an easily accessable reference tool.

The crop camera will be better than cropping the full frame camera. I did a test with that scenario and you an see the results for yourself here:

What is the affect of taking a full frame (d850) and setting the image area to DX size? Is there a button that can be programmed to do this on the fly outside of the menu system?

In that case, it is all about the eyes - focus, sharpness and highlights, IMHO. Nice colorful snap.

Nice snap. Too much contrast and other than what you tell us, no sense of environment.
