I have a question about shipping charges on used camera gear.I just purchased a used Nikon lens & was charged $11.25 for shipping from Adorama. I live in Ohio.I don’t remember being charged shipping before. The Nikon lens was over $800.00,I would think that would warrant free shipping,am I wrong? I was told because it was used I would be charged shipping because it wouln’t Be fair to the seller!
Yeah, shipping charges are a killer. I've decided against ordering items when the shipping charge was about the same as the cost of the item itself. Shipping is expensive, and it will go up on January 19. Most dealers have requirements for free shipping, but even if an item is expensive, they still lose money on shipping. With all the online competition, we are in the habit of getting free shipping. I've bought and sold ukuleles, and shipping can be anywhere from $25 to $75.
Well I guess I will go back to eBay where they give free shipping.I purchased almost all my gear from Adorama but I think I will go elseware after this!
Wouldn't it depend on their shipping policy?
I'm not aware of their policy. They decide what gets shipped for free. It might not be everything.
I've ordered multiple items from another company, some items qualified for free shipping, some did not.
So if the list price of the lens itself had been $811 with "free" shipping, would you have purchased? Was the price of the product comparable to other stores? Obviously, nothing is free - these are businesses that need to be profitable in order to stay in business.
On Adorama's site I see, "Shipping charges are not included in our pricing. Please place your order in the Shopping Cart to view shipping charges."
My bro is in mail order business.
They make $$$ on shipping as well!!
Capitalism!!
I purchased a printer from Adorama thru Amazon and since I have Amazon Prime the shipping was free. Neat trick if you can find that desired lens etc on Amazon.
Free shipping is great when you can get it, but if your going to shop on the internet it would be best to realize that someone has to pay the shipping costs. They either hide it in the cost of the product you purchase, or you pay a fee for it. I hardly think $11.25 to ship something you deemed worth the price as out of line. Would the total package have been cheaper elsewhere? Did the $11.25 really screw the whole deal for you?

I happen to use B&H, but Adorama has many faithful, satisfied customers on UHH. I'm positive you wouldn't have paused in your purchase if that $11 had been hidden in the price of the lens itself.

So you're going to wear that insult all day, all week, or however long this thread stays active? Hope your move to another company turns out to be worth it.
Shipping anything costs money. That cost is either separate from the cost of the merchandise or it is included in the cost of the merchandise - simple as that. If comparison shopping, one should always be aware of the seller’s position on shipping charges regardless of the price of the merchandise.
Re-reading my post, it sounded like I’m stating the obvious .......
