Annette and I always enjoy visiting Sunken Gardens when we take our annual vacation to the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area on the Gulf side of Florida. We are both members of the North Carolina Arboretum. One of the membership benefits is the reciprocal admissions program sponsored by The American Horticultural Society which entitles us to special admission privileges and discounts to more than 345 gardens throughout North America. We have taken advantage of free admission to visit the Chicago Botanic Gardens, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden near Charlotte, North Carolina, and Sunken Gardens many times through the past few years.

The Sunken Gardens are 4 acres of well-established botanical gardens, located in the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood of St. Petersburg, Florida, The Gardens have existed for more than a century, and are one of the oldest roadside tourist attractions in the United States. The Gardens are now operated by the City of St. Petersburg, and maintained with the help of volunteers. Sunken Gardens are open to the public every day of the week. An admission fee is charged for entrance into the gardens and a yearly membership is also available, however as I mentioned above, Annette and I are entitled to free admission through our North Carolina Arboretum/American Horticultural Society membership.

Sunken Gardens retains their historical interest as an important example of a 1930s Florida roadside commercial attraction, and is probably the oldest commercial tourist attraction on Florida's west coast. The Gardens are open to the public for educational programs, tours, and special events, particularly weddings which have taken place for decades on the Wedding Lawn,[2] and in the banquet facilities in the Garden Room overlooking the unique garden setting.

The Gardens began in 1903, when plumber and avid gardener George Turner Sr. (1881-1961) purchased six acres of land,[3] including a shallow lake 10 feet (3.0 m) below sea level, which he drained to form his private "sunken" garden. Turner started planting papayas and citrus fruits along with other exotic plants on the rich soil surrounding his home. By the 1920s, Turner had opened a nursery and began selling fruits, vegetables, and other plants, and visitors were paying a nickel each to stroll through the gardens. In the fall of 1935, he fenced his garden and started charging an admission fee of 24ยข. The Gardens eventually became widely popular, and from the 1950s through the 1970s were ranked among Florida's top ten commercial attractions. After Turner's death in 1961, his sons, Ralph and George Jr. continued to run the gardens, which were eventually passed on to Ralph's three sons. They eventually sold it to the city in 1999 for more than $2.26 million.

The Gardens currently contain over 500 species of tropical and subtropical plants amidst pools and cascading waterfalls, lushly planted in a collection of more than 50,000 tropical plants and flowers. They include a Japanese garden, cactus garden, and butterfly garden, and Chilean flamingos. Plants include bougainvilleas, royal palms, water lilies, shrimp plants, and fruit trees. The garden atmosphere is peaceful and many of the plants are quite large (compared to typical specimens) due to their long history of protection and cultivation.

I applied a painterly pastel effect to these photos using the legacy Topaz plugin, Simplify. Post processing also included adjustments and enhancements using PaintShop Pro, Luminar AI, and Exposure 6.

Annette and I go for daily hikes when visiting my sister and her family in Grayslake, Illinois. Inevitably, a Lake County forest preserve hike is on the agenda.

Lake County Forest Preserves (also called Lake County Forest Preserve District, or LCFPD) is a governmental organization that purchases land and oversees the use of such public open-space in Lake County, Illinois. It is a member of Chicago Wilderness.

Ethel Untermyer is considered the founder of Lake County Forest Preserves. Ethel and her son went exploring in the woods one day, in 1957. She was new to the lake county area and wanted to explore. She asked her friend where the nearest forest preserve was, and Ethel was shocked to find that there was none. She then organized a countywide public vote to create a Lake County Forest preserve district. Many people did not take into account of what she was doing. She kept telling people in her community about forest preserves and slowly gained support from many people. At this time Lake County just barely had 300,000 people and even then, people noticed the lack of natural land. By election day in November 1958, a handful of public support was shown in the community. The public vote passed with a surprising 60 percent of votes. As of then, Lake County Forest Preserve District was legally established in circuit court. A committee of citizens was then formed, with Ethel as its chair. In 1961 the first forest preserve opened in Lake County; Van Patten Woods in Wadsworth.

The mission of the Lake County Forest Preserves is preservation, restoration, education and recreation. They protect about 31,000 acres of natural land and are the second largest Forest preserve service in Illinois. The Lake County Forest Preserve has a set 100 year plan. Their goal for this 100 year plan is to keep natural land safe and restore it. They want residents to take great pride in forest preserves, that their community provides.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy over 205 miles of trails for a variety of outdoor recreation uses, ponds and lakes for fishing, public golf courses, historical and cultural venues, public access to Lake Michigan and the Fox River, and award-winning nature and history education programs and events. Most preserves are open from 6:30 am to sunset, daily.

Nice setup! Do you record just for yourselves, or post on the web?

If you know App State, are you familiar with their music recording program? Some friends of my twins went there. They have a band known as Barefoot Modern, known for an eclectic blend of alternative rock, pop, grunge, country, and indie surprises. They have recorded several albums.

There are a couple of bass players you might find interesting. Australian Tal Wilkenfeld is known for her work with Jeff Beck, but she has worked with half the greats in rock and jazz over the years, and was one of the last people to play with Prince Rogers Nelson before he died. Most of their work is still in the can. But she has two of her own albums out, and has played on many other recordings and tours.

Kinga Glyk is from Poland. She has played many jazz festivals and is known all over Europe for her funky sound.

Right now, we are just recording for ourselves and the pure fun of it. We have burned 11 CD's worth of original material since February 2021. We get together every Friday afternoon at my home. You could describe our music as a kind of Avant Garde jazz rock fusion. Think King Crimson with little boundaries. Also, Miles Davis Bitches Brew and the like.

Thanks for the links. I really enjoyed Barefoot Modern. I'll check out the other ones too. I think I remember that bass player in a Jeff Beck video in a televised concert a few years ago.

Take Care

My friend Chris and I met in the Jazz Stage Band in high school over 50 years ago. He played drums and I played bass guitar. We formed our own group playing cover tunes along with our own original compositions. He and I have remained friends over the past 50 years and even though each of us moved to different parts of the country, we continued to find ways to collaborate musically. Eventually we both relocated and now live within a little over an hourโ€™s drive from each other. These two shots were taken in my home recording studio in Northeast Tennessee last month. Pretty cool to still be making music together after all of these years!

Me with my new Ibanez bass guitar. It sure is pretty and plays and sounds real nice too!
